Hey Magnolia! It's Me again, Chief Wood here. It's been a busy time around town lately.

🟦A few minutes before 11 p.m. Thursday night Mr. Milton Donovan West, age 33 of the Warsaw area decided to take his Red 2014 Camaro for a stroll at 100+ mph right through the middle of Magnolia on Monk Street.

Much to Mr. West's surprise, he gained the attention of Capt. Jason Holliday & Ofc. Jose Flores who were exchanging shift change information nearby.

When the Magnolia Officers signaled for the hurried gentleman to stop through use of their blue lights & sirens, he decided it was a better idea to increase his speed to in excess of 130 mph. I'm guessing he really didn't want to talk to them.🤷🏼‍♂️

As a result of Mr. West's decision to run, he wrecked his Camaro in a field just South of House of Raeford on U.S. 117, just before the Brooks Quinn intersection where the stoplight is. He also sustained a minor laceration to his forehead.

Mr. West was arrested and charged with Felony Fleeing To Elude Arrest, Driving While License Revoked, Speeding, No Insurance, Possession of a Schedule VI Controlled Substance, Carrying a Concealed Gun, Reckless Driving, & Driving a Motor Vehicle with No Registration.

Mr. West was issued a $5,000.⁰⁰ Secure Bond & tucked in at the Duplin County Jail.

Mr. West's impromptu decision to run from law enforcement & endanger everyone on the highway qualifies him to now & forever lose his Camaro (or what's left of it) to the State under North Carolina's "Run & Done" law.

We appreciate the quick assistance from all who helped, including Duplin County Sheriff's Office, Rose Hill P.D., North Carolina Highway Patrol, Duplin EMS, and Duplin County Communications.
If I missed anyone, you too!👍🏻

Before closing, I'd just like to say a few words of appreciation for the top notch professional staff we have here at Magnolia Police Department. Capt. Holliday & Ofc. Flores did an outstanding job as always.

What some folks don't realize is that although we are a small town, and we tend to go out of our way to be friendly & extend small town Southern Hospitality, we are still highly trained professionals. So don't get the wrong idea. If you come here with bad intentions, or threaten the safety of our citizens... we will bust your "aspirations" pretty quickly.🟦

Y'all stay safe out there!

Until next time,

~ Chief Wood

Duplin County law enforcement agencies are working together in response to several recent acts of gun violence across our communities. Over the past 72 hours, multiple shootings involving occupied homes have occurred throughout the county.

On Saturday, May 16, at approximately 2:00 a.m., deputies with the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Beulaville area after multiple shots were fired into a residence.

On Sunday, May 17, again at approximately 2:00 a.m., deputies responded to another shooting near Warsaw where multiple shots were fired into a dwelling.

Later that same day, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Wallace Police Department responded to a shooting into a home on North College Street.

Officers from Wallace, Warsaw, and Beulaville Police Departments, along with deputies from the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office and agents with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, are working diligently to identify those responsible and determine whether these incidents are connected to one another or to other recent shootings throughout the county.

We are asking for the public’s help.

This is not about snitching. It is about protecting our communities, keeping families safe in their homes, and holding violent offenders accountable. Someone in our communities knows who is responsible, and the information you provide could prevent further violence.

If you have any information regarding these incidents, please contact any of the involved agencies or email:

Hey Magnolia!
Chief Wood here. On this beautiful Sunday Evening, the last day of Police Memorial Week, I took time to stop & have a few words with Heavy-D. Most know, but some don't... So I'll lay it out for those who don't. Former Magnolia Chief Donald Hall & I were law enforcement "Partners, Brothers, & Friends" like the tagged song says since 1999, we actually knew each other before then. I was Captain at Warsaw P.D. & he was working at Duplin County Jail. We had an opening for a Drug Officer at Warsaw. My friend Captain Steve Stancil & liked Donald, or "Heavy-D" as those of us among his friends & family affectionately called him. We suggested to then Warsaw Chief R.P. Wood, Jr. to hire him for the position. Now all three of my good friends are gone on & I'm the only one left to tell the story. I think it's good to tell it here because it'll be recorded & shared forever.
Heavy was a great fit & we all became close. He & I particularly worked close together on a lot of cases. I got stories that would keep you laughing forever if I could put them all down here.
Heavy & worked together at Warsaw until he left for Magnolia in 2009. In 2011 & 2012 I came over & helped him out part-time.
When Heavy passed in 2021, "our" little sister Lakesha told me that she had Prayed over his desk that someone with the right heart would get the job he left open, & that I needed to apply for it. After Praying about it, many doors opened that led Me right into it.
So you see, my affiliation with Magnolia didn't come after Heavy, I see it as a continuation of a long friendship.
When I dropped in on him today, it was very peaceful there in his little shady spot. I could see him grinning that same Heavy grin everybody who loved him knew.
Thanks for a lot of good memories Heavy!
💙🤜🏼🤛🏽💜
