CONVERSATION WITH THE COMMISSIONER

THE MILLER BROTHERS

Magnolia Town Commissioner Eric Graham was in enemy territory on Thursday, June 11, down in Teachey, North Carolina, while at Wallace Rose Hill High School at the JJ Miller Basketball SKILLS CAMP for ages 8-13, where ball handling, Defense, Shooting Form, and game situations were taught by WRH Bulldog Female Basketball Head Coach Jermel Miller and his "little" brother JJ Miller.

JJ, a retired professional basketball player turned entrepreneur, mentor, and community leader, who, after a standout career at East Duplin High School, earned a Division I scholarship at the historic North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, NC, where he became an HBCU All-American and Hall of Famer.

After displaying AGGIE PRIDE at the highest level, Miller went on to play 15 years of professional basketball across Europe and South America, where he was known as one of the top guards in every league, earning MVP honors, multiple Guard of the Year awards, and European League All-Star recognition.

MAGNOLIA: MELTON SWORN IN AS "NEW" TOWN CLERK

On May 2026, Jessica L. Melton was sworn in as the "new" Town Clerk for the Town of Magnolia, during a special meeting of the Board of Commissioners in the Gwendolyn B. Vann Conference Room.

Melton, a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where she earned bachelor's degrees in English and Political Science, began her career as a high school English teacher before pursuing a Master of Science in International Education Development from the University of Pennsylvania.

Following graduate school, she built a career in international development and operations management, serving in leadership roles with U.S. government contractors supporting USAID-funded programs across the Middle East, Central Asia, and Washington, D.C.

Her work included overseeing multimillion-dollar projects, leading cross-functional teams, managing grants and contracts, and supporting governance, education, workforce development, and water and sanitation initiatives in challenging environments.

After years of living in major cities and overseas, Jess, who has more than 15 years of experience managing complex programs, budgets, personnel, and service delivery systems in both domestic and international settings, was drawn back to the quieter pace of life in eastern North Carolina.

Inspired in part by cherished childhood memories visiting family in the state—where her father was born and raised—she fell in love with the peaceful charm of Magnolia.

"Jess is a great addition to our staff," stated Commissioner Graham.

"We are extremely happy to have her as part of our daily operations to make our small town even better."

MAGNOLIA: ATF OFFERS $5,000 FOR INFORMATION ABOUT VIOLENT GUN CRIMES IN DUPLIN

The Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF) is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of those responsible for a series of shootings in Duplin and Sampson counties.

According to ATF, law enforcement agencies have been investigating a rash of shootings since February that authorities believe may be gang-related.

Since May 16 alone, officials say there have been 11 shooting incidents reported across the two counties.

One of those shootings in Sampson County resulted in the death of an innocent bystander.

ATF is working alongside several local agencies, including the Duplin County Sheriff's Office, Sampson County Sheriff's Office, and police departments in Magnolia, Kenansville, Warsaw, Wallace, Beulaville, and Rose Hill.

"The level of violence is escalating, and we're at a critical point where we need to find those responsible," said ATF Special Agent in Charge Alicia Jones.

"We hope that by offering this reward, someone will decide to do the right thing and share with us information that could help stop this cycle of crime."

Anyone with information about the shootings is urged to contact ATF at 1-888-ATF-TIPS (888-283-8477) or email [email protected]. Officials say all tips will remain anonymous.

The Duplin County Sheriff's Office is also encouraging residents to submit anonymous tips through its website at DuplinSheriff.com or by calling its tip line at 910-372-9202. (Source:WCTI)
