From the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services for Saturday evening 6/6:

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for portions of CT, NJ and NY until 10PM tonight. The main threats will be damaging winds and hail. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. If headed out, have a plan to take shelter if a storm gets too close.

UPDATE 3:15pm - The roadway is clear and Route 6 has now been reopened.

The single occupant driver, who was wearing his seat belt, walked from his crashed vehicle to the ambulance. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The investigation continues by CPD.

ACCIDENT ALERT - Route 6 vicinity of Countryside Kitchen (Buckshollow Road)

There is a serious accident on Route 6 near Buckshollow Road. Use Buckshollow as a detour between Union Valley and Buckshollow. Avoid the area near Countryside Kitchen.

Scholarship Night

Last night at Four Brothers Restaurant in Mahopac, members of Carmel PD and Carmel PBA joined with The Greater Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce to celebrate Scholarship Night with a great group of students from Carmel High School and Mahopac High School.

Officer Pearson, Sergeant Anderson, and Sergeant Macom from the Carmel PBA and the Pietropaolo family were on hand to present the second annual Gary Pietropaolo Jr. Memorial Scholarship awards to three of our local high school students. Carmel PBA's Pietropaolo Scholarships honor the memory of late Carmel PD Police Officer Gary Pietropaolo Jr. and are supported by Carmel PBA's annual "Run for 45" Gary Pietropaolo Jr. Memorial 5K.

These kids have accomplished so much during their high school careers and we can't wait to see what they can achieve as they move onto college in the fall. Great work and Congratulations!

Yesterday, May 31st, shortly after 3pm, Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services - Putnam County 911 notified Carmel PD and Carmel Fire Dept. NY of a structure fire on Cottage Drive in the Carmel Hamlet. Arriving CPD and CFD units encountered evidence of a fire in the garage of the residence that was apparently caused by a malfunctioning lithium-ion battery.

***IMPORTANT REMINDER*** If you have a central station monitored alarm system for fire and/or burglary, make sure it is functioning properly and goes to the correct emergency response number. This is especially important in newer construction homes. Even though a fire alarm was installed and the homeowner had an alarm service in this incident, the fire alarm did not function. Thankfully the homeowner's quick actions and calling of 911 averted potentially much larger damage to the home.

** Update 12:55pm - 1 Lane in Both Directions open **

84 w/b at 684 - Two Tractor Trailer MVA w/ Entrapment. Both E/B and W/B sides are affected. Please avoid the area. Brewster Fire Department, Empress Emergency Medical Services, New York State Police, Putnam County Sheriff's Office, Croton Falls Fire Department, North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps (NSVAC.ORG), and Danbury Fire Department - CT are working the scene.

Heavy Traffic in the area, and the roadway will be closed for an extended period of time.

CPD is out with Carmel Fire Dept. NY on Cottage Drive at a garage fire. CFD has the scene under control and there is no danger to the community.

Please avoid the area.

A multi-agency training exercise will be taking place at Putnam Hospital Center, today from 9:00am - 2:00pm. You will see an increased presence of police vehicles and emergency services in the area.
