SUNDAY, AUG 23 - STOP-DWI detail makes an arrest (ARREST)
An officer working the STOP-DWI detail watched a driver pass with a phone in hand, then swerve to avoid the stop. The driver had no license on her and was charged with DWI.

SUNDAY, AUG 23 - Forged driver's license, felony charge (FELONY)
Helping State Police locate a hit-and-run vehicle, officers found the driver's New York license was a forgery and her privileges suspended. She was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument.

MONDAY, AUG 24 - Hauler summonsed for 5 a.m. pickup (SUMMONS)
A resident's camera caught a carting company emptying a dumpster just after 5 a.m. The company was summonsed under the town code that sets permitted garbage collection hours.

MONDAY, AUG 24 - License plates stolen from a driveway (ADVISORY)
A resident found both plates gone from a vehicle parked in his driveway. Check that your plates are still on and secured - stolen plates turn up on other crimes.

THURSDAY, AUG 27 - ATV and dirt bike complaints (ADVISORY)
Three separate neighborhood complaints this week about ATVs and dirt bikes on roads and trails. Riders fled before officers arrived. Call while it is happening - after the fact we have nothing to act on.

FRIDAY, AUG 28 - Car fire after brakes failed (ASSIST)
A driver lost her brakes and her husband pulled the emergency brake to stop the car, which then caught fire. Both got out unhurt. Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department knocked it down.

SATURDAY, AUG 29 - Shoplifting arrest at a Carmel market (ARREST)
Store security stopped a man who passed all points of sale with a cart of unpaid groceries. He was charged and released on his own recognizance with a court date.

Carmel PD WEEKLY BLOTTER - August 16–22, 2026

271 calls handled. 2 arrests. 15 traffic summonses. 51 medical assists. 9 reported crashes.

Three of this week's panes are advisories, and they are the ones worth your ninety seconds:

→ A resident lost $4,000 to callers posing as bank security and a federal investigator. If someone tells you your account is compromised and asks you to withdraw cash or load money onto an app at a store, hang up and call your bank at the number on your own card.

→ A local business was billed $11,000 on an invoice sent from a compromised employee email account. Confirm payment requests by phone, using a number you already had on file.

→ Officers handled five off-road vehicle complaints, including a child of about seven on a gas-powered quad in the roadway with no helmet. ATVs and dirt bikes are not street legal in New York.

Through the rest of the summer Carmel PD will have extra high-visiblity patrols on our roads to deter, detect, and apprehend impaired drivers. Drive Sober. Have a plan for a safe ride home. STOP DWI New York

Carmel PD Officers, Town Of Kent NY Police , and PCSO Deputies will once again be on the roads of Putnam County to deter impaired driving with high visibility patrols and to detect and apprehend those who make the unwise decision to drive while impaired.
Don't let being arrested be the "thing you did this summer"! Get a ride, call a cab, use a ride share app, whatever it takes to keep from getting behind the wheel when you're impaired.

SUNDAY, AUG 9 - Joint STOP-DWI checkpoint on Route 6 (ARREST)
Carmel PD and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office ran an overnight DWI checkpoint. A driver who drove past the stop command was charged with DWI and with failing to comply with a lawful order.

MONDAY, AUG 10 - Storm brings down trees and wires (STORM)
Monday's weather generated a cluster of calls - five trees down, wires and road hazards, and two fire alarms. Great teamwork with Carmel Highway, Putnam County DPW, and Fire Department partners.

MONDAY, AUG 10 - Unlicensed door-to-door solicitor (SUMMONS)
A man selling pest control door to door had no town permit and no ID, and was issued an appearance ticket. Legitimate solicitors carry a Town of Carmel permit - ask to see it.

TUESDAY, AUG 11 - Cooking oil theft crew stopped (ARREST)
Patrol watched a van work its way behind Route 6 businesses and stopped it. Inside were two 200-gallon tanks, a pump and hoses used to siphon used cooking oil.

WEDNESDAY, AUG 12 - Tech support scam costs a resident (ADVISORY)
A resident answered an email posing as antivirus renewal billing and was walked through a form that turned a small charge into a six-figure one. Never call a number from an email.

FRIDAY, AUG 14 - Conditions detail nets two arrests (ARRESTS)
An officer working a conditions detail made two separate unlicensed-driver arrests in one evening - one for speeding, one for driving with no headlights. Both were charged and released for court.

SATURDAY, AUG 15 - DWI arrest after turn signal stop (ARREST)
A vehicle stopped on Route 6 for failing to signal turned into a DWI investigation. The driver was charged and released with an appearance ticket.
