Mahtomedi Fire Department

Mahtomedi Fire Department The Mahtomedi Fire Department serves the communities of Mahtomedi, Willernie, Pine Springs and Grant Paul, Minnesota.

The Mahtomedi Fire Department proudly serves over 12,000 residents living in an area of thirty square miles. The Mahtomedi (Mah-tohMEE-dye) which is Sioux for the “Great White Bear”, is located ten miles northeast of the Capitol City of St. The City of Mahtomedi is nestled on the southern and eastern shores of White Bear Lake and is largely at bedroom community, with a small industrial mixture and

a large amount of water recreation. The department is a municipal “paid on call” department consisting of thirty-five firefighters responding out of one station. The estimated run volume for 2010 is almost 800 total responses. The department began in 1933 when the Willernie-Lincolntown Fire Department was Founded, providing fire protection to the cities of Willernie and Lincolntown. In 1972 a merger occurred with the Mahtomedi Fire Department, resulting in the Mahtomedi Fire Department as we know it today. The merger resulted in the department responding out of two small stations until 1981. In 1981, the present fire station was completed and the equipment consolidated into one station.

Last week, the Mahtomedi Fire Department had the opportunity to train alongside the Stillwater MN Fire Department during a joint shift training focused on rural water supply operations.

Many of the areas we protect do not have fire hydrants, making it essential for firefighters to establish a continuous water supply during a fire. These operations require teamwork, coordination, and communication between multiple agencies.

Training together before an emergency allows our crews to become familiar with each other's equipment, procedures, and expectations so that when the real call comes, we can work as one team under some of the most stressful conditions.

We are grateful for the strong partnerships we have with our neighboring departments and look forward to many more opportunities to train together. Working together makes all of us better—and ultimately provides a higher level of service to the communities we serve.

This week, our firefighters trained on firefighter survival skills—critical techniques designed to help firefighters escape dangerous situations if the unexpected occurs.

While we hope these are skills we never have to use, we know that preparation saves lives. By continually training on self-rescue, emergency survival techniques, and working together under stress, we ensure our firefighters are ready to respond to even the most challenging situations.

Training like this reinforces our commitment to providing the highest level of service to our community while making sure everyone goes home safely after every call.

The Mahtomedi Fire Department is excited to celebrate National Night Out with our community!

On Tuesday, August 4, our firefighters will be visiting neighborhood block parties throughout the evening alongside our public safety partners. National Night Out is a great opportunity to strengthen relationships, meet your local first responders, and connect with your neighbors while helping build a safer, stronger community.

If your neighborhood is hosting a block party and you would like the Mahtomedi Fire Department to stop by, please email [email protected] with your event location and approximate time. While we can't guarantee a visit to every gathering due to emergency calls, we'll do our best to stop by as many as possible.

We look forward to seeing everyone around the community for another great National Night Out!
