While we close out Fire Prevention month, Mahwah Fire Department would like to reinforce the most basic thing you can do to get help quickly. Whether it is a fire, gas leak, medical emergency, or police matter, in the Mahwah area 911 is your fastest avenue for help.
If you are on a cell phone just be aware you may connect to a cell tower outside our area, so first inform the dispatcher what town your emergency is in, they may ask you to hold while they contact the local agency.
Be calm and give the dispatcher the information they need to get help to you quickly.

Saturday morning 6:44 multiple Mahwah FD, PD, & EMS units converged at the notoriously dangerous 287 flyover on the NY border. A fully loaded fuel tanker carrying nearly 8000 gallons of gasoline had overturned and was furiously burning.
Squad 2(foam pumper) and Engine 117 were primary attack with station 3 engines laying a supply line nearly 3000’ across the highway.

Due to the size of the incident additional mutual aid was requested from NY State departments and the Northern Region UASI foam task force was also activated, bringing nearly 20,000 gallons of foam concentrate to the scene if it transitioned to a long term event. Thankfully the burning fuel was contained to a roughly 2000’ stretch between the highway and the adjacent mountain. Numerous brush fires were extinguished by additional Mahwah and mutual aid units.

The driver of the tractor trailer sadly perished in the accident which is the reason for a delay in this post.

Units operating or staged to cover additional Mahwah calls:
Mahwah Engine 115 / 117 / Rescue 1
Mahwah Squad 2 & Ladder 2
Mahwah Engine 320 / RP17

This week members of Companies 2 and 4 attended training on Tactical Response to Natural Gas Emergencies.
Firefighters and officers trained using our department purchased explosive gas meters on a custom training simulator called “Leak Street”. Additionally, members also performed tabletop SOP response scenarios to layout operations during a full-scale gas emergency. Hands on training included live gas fed meter fires.
The training was presented by Jerry Knapp a 45+ year firefighter and expert in gas emergencies.

Mahwah Fire Department is extremely sad after the loss of a great person in our neighboring department of Spring Valley NY.
Jared Lloyd was one of the first arriving firefighters at a fire in a 200 bed assisted living facility. Without hesitation Jared began evacuating and searching for trapped victims on the upper floors. It's unknown how many residents were pulled from the building personally by Jared but he kept returning inside to find more. Jareds heroic and selfless acts of bravery and courage will never be forgotten. Our hearts are sad and heads held low as we remember what a remarkable person Jared was and how many lives he touched from the Mahwah FD.
May you rest easy Jared.
