Mahwah PBA, Local #143

Mahwah PBA, Local #143 Mahwah PBA, Local #143, is an extension of the New Jersey State PBA, the largest union in the state representing law enforcement and corrections officers.

While a PBA, or Policemen's Benevolent Association, may sound like it exists solely for the benefit of its own members this is only partly true. The executive board and general membership of the Mahwah PBA firmly believe we are a valuable part of the community we serve. Throughout any given calendar year the Mahwah PBA participates in a wide variety of events and fund raisers within the Township o

f Mahwah and Bergen County. Additionally, the Mahwah PBA provides financial support to a number of charities, youth organizations, and schools, as well as volunteering countless hours to the collection and delivery of much needed goods and gifts.

Mahwah PBA Local 143 partnered with Mahwah Cadet Troop 8031 for the annual Toy Drive! As part of their community service project, Troop 8031 assisted in wrapping donation boxes. Together, we are collecting new, unwrapped toys for children in need this Holliday season! The girls decided to specifically place a box at their middle school hoping to involve their peers for such a great cause! A big thanks to Troop 8031 for your hard work and kindness!

Be on the look out for the donation boxes around town!

It’s that hairy time of year again!

Mahwah PBA will once again be participating in the 2025 Borough of Beards, pairing up with numerous other Bergen County Police Departments in order to all come together to raise funds to donate to those in need.

This year, we will be raising money and donating to the Woolis family. Christopher Woolis suddenly and tragically passed away from cancer on September 16th after receiving his diagnosis just a week prior. He leaves behind his wife Christa and their three children Chloe, Peter, and Anthony. Not only was he a devoted father and husband, but as a coach, mentor, and advocate for his community, Chris always did his part to show up for others. Please join us and consider donating to support the family during this incredibly difficult time.

The link for any donations to the family will be posted in our bio.

Thank you to all who join us in donating and to all the participating PBAs and police departments.

𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗜𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧: One of two members of a sophisticated South American burglary ring who were captured by Mahwah police and turned over to the FBI this morning is a fugitive wanted for a homicide in Colombia, authorities said.

A neighbor at the Rio Vista development called police at 10 a.m. Friday (March 21) to report seeing the pair from Queens being dropped off and then entering the property of a $4.3 million home on Brams Hill Drive wearing masks and carrying backpacks.

Officer Connor Gilgen, who was the first to arrive, chased both men on foot through backyards before grabbing one of the suspects, identified as Cristian Bernal-Walles, Mahwah Police Capt. Guido Bussinelli said.

Gilgen secured Bernal-Walles, 28, in his patrol cruiser, then went back and found the second man – identified as Oscar Alvarez-Alzate, 21 – hiding in the brush, Bussinelli said.

In the backpacks police found a crowbar, an angle grinder, extension cord, rope and a cell phone jammer, he said.

Bernal-Walles (𝗺𝘂𝗴𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁) and Alvarez-Alzate (𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁) were found to be part of the South American Theft Group (SATG), which Mahwah police have been investigating for several unsolved burglaries, the captain said.

FBI agents called to Mahwah told township police that Bernal-Walles was wanted on an Interpol warrant for homicide in Colombia, he said.

Mahwah police charged the pair with conspiracy, resisting arrest and possession of burglary tools before turning them over to the FBI.

Bussinelli praised the “alert action” of the resident who called police, making the arrests possible.

He reminded any citizens who see something to immediately contact local police. They’d rather go on a call that doesn’t pan out than see anyone harmed or property stolen.
