As motorists take to the roads this Memorial Day holiday, the Maitland Police Department is urging everyone to buckle up.

Law enforcement agencies across the country will be out in full force this weekend, taking part in the 2026 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization and cracking down on motorists who are not belted.

In 2024, 9,758 vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts. Among the young adults (18 to 34) passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2024, 59% were unbuckled — one of the highest percentages for all age groups.

Public Safety Alert:

A section of Wymore Road is closed south of Brightwater Circle in Maitland due to a large sinkhole that formed underneath both lanes of the roadway.

The roughly 20-foot-wide area of the Orange County-maintained road, which is located just east of Interstate 4 and north of Maitland Boulevard, was spotted just after 12 a.m. Friday. The City of Maitland is working with Orange County to cordon off the area and to set up a detour.

No structures are impacted. The subsidence does not appear to be growing at this time. Motorists and residents should avoid this area until further notice. Please follow all marked detours when set up later this morning.

More kids are riding electric-powered bikes and scooters in Maitland, using public streets with cars and trucks and sidewalks with pedestrians.

Adults should talk to kids about the rules of the road and how to stay safe in these busy areas.

Young riders should stay far from large vehicles, pedestrians and other cyclists. Do not ride dangerously. Slow down, and make sure motorists can see you.

Do not wear earbuds, headphones or other audio devices while riding. Always wear safety gear including a properly fitted helmet.

Follow all traffic signs and signals. Stop at roadway intersections.

Got A Question?

Road rules can be confusing with so many new, electric-powered products that make it easy for many ages to travel around the city.

The Maitland Police Department's top priority is to keep everyone safe - including young children on e-bikes and e-scooters.
