The Riders Mills Schoolhouse was built in the late 1790s, and it is one of our nation’s oldest public school buildings still in existence. It was also one of America’s last single-room schoolhouses in operation; classes were held every school year until its closing in 1953. It was acquired by the Riders Mills Historical Association in 1966 and is listed on both the State and National Registry of Historic Sites.

Golden Age of Town Life: Ghent, NY 1900-1925

Come along with Ghent Town Historian Gregg Berninger as he explores town life when people worked together, gathered together, gossiped together, and knew one another far better than we do today. It was a golden age of organic community that holds lessons for us today as we make our way through what some observers have called the age of loneliness.
Gregg Berninger is the Ghent Town Historian and the recipient of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for the use of Literature in Historical Interpretation and the Edgar Stickles Award for Contributions to the Town of Ghent.
