The Malden Emergency Center (MEC) is a nonprofit 501c3 organization whose mission is to provide emergency services to the citizens of Malden and other surrounding communities at no cost to the taxpayers. A secondary mission of the organization is to provide training, experience, and mentorship to young men and women interested in careers in the fire service. Countless members of the Malden Emergen
cy Center have gone on to become full time career firefighters throughout the country. MEC has been serving the community for over 65 years and has responded to countless fires, floods, medical emergencies, hurricanes, blizzards, car accidents and a myriad of other incidents. MEC currently operates a 1989 Pierce Heavy Rescue (Rescue 2), with a custom built SCBA air filling system, as well as a 2005 Ford F-150 (Squad 2) and a portable lighting plant. The main function of MEC and it’s members is to support fire ground operations by filling SCBA tanks as well as providing scene lighting to aid firefighting operations and fire investigations. MEC responds automatically to fires that reach a 2nd alarm or above in the cities of Malden and Everett. MEC also responds to fires in other communities as requested. Other major functions of MEC include providing lighting for law enforcement investigations, providing lighting and assistance for emergency public works projects, providing emergency water pumping services for residents during flooding, and clearing debris during severe storms. The members of the Malden Emergency Center, past and present, are unpaid volunteers that stand ready to serve the City and its residents during any type of emergency or disaster. These members dedicate thousands of hours each year to serving the community while still working full time jobs or going to school.
