Candace Julyan for Malden Ward 3

Candace Julyan for Malden Ward 3 Candidate for Malden Ward 3 City Councillor in 2017.

09/26/2019

The national political landscape has become quite depressing. The current occupant in the White House has led with bullying, lies, empty promises, and self-importance. I am saddened that this approach is now seen as "normal" and has become part of our local political landscape as well. Given that reality, I was delighted with our City Council this week when they unanimously and articulately denounced the "shameful" resolution proposed by Councillor Matheson that was based on the inaccurate and misleading reporting by Fox News. I am grateful to all the Councillors who spoke and for their willingness to stand up to the use of "fake news" for political gain. All of them brought a bit of hope into my heart!

Another spot of hope this week came at the Mayor Candidate Forum. I was pleased to see that Mayor Christenson remained positive, responded to the questions asked, and stuck with facts. In contrast, Councillor Matheson often ignored the question to use the time to find new ways to distort, exaggerate, and generally denigrate Gary's record of accomplishments. Politics is very unpleasant and depressing enterprise these days. It has truly become a thankless job. I am grateful that we continue to have strong, honest, open-minded folks willing to run for local office who focus on their hopes and ideas rather than choosing to distort and bully. Hats off and good luck to the folks that will be on my ballot: Mayor Gary Christenson, Councillor at Large Debbie DeMaria, Councillor at Large Steve Winslow, and Ward 3 Councillor Amanda Linehan. Thank you all for running and may you all win!

I have been moved by the number of you who have been asking me about my intentions to run in the upcoming Ward Councillor election. Thank you for your encouragement and support. My favorite part of running last time was getting a chance to talk with so many of my Ward 3 neighbors.

I will not be running this time around. I think, for me, once was enough in seeking office though I continue to feel strongly that Ward 3 deserves better representation from our Councillor--someone who is responsive and willing to listen to ALL of the people in the ward, not just a few. I highly recommend that you look at Amanda Linehan's candidacy for Ward 3 Councillor. I fully endorse her as I feel that she will be an excellent Councillor for our ward. I think she will listen AND get things done. A winning combination that is sorely lacking in our current Ward 3 Councillor.

Again, it was an honor to meet so many of you and I look forward to continuing to have conversations about what is important to you (and to me!) about living here in Malden. You will definitely see me knocking on doors this campaign season, just not for myself--for others!

Greetings all,

While I’m disappointed that we came up short on Tuesday, I am so proud of our campaign and team. We gave the voters of Ward 3 a real choice. We worked hard and listened to the voices of all the residents in Ward 3, not just those who agreed with us. And I feel that we followed Michelle Obama’s advice with regard to campaign shenanigans—when they went low, we went high.

I needed yesterday to reflect on these past six months. Being a first time candidate was an eye-opening experience for sure. It was definitely a roller coaster ride. I am so very grateful to those of you who have been there with me on this journey—both family and friends near and far, old and new. Your unwavering support was critical—supporting me through the lows and celebrating the highs together. Thank you!

Campaigns are a lot of work—much more than I had anticipated! Thanks to all of our incredible volunteers who knocked on doors, made phone calls, held signs, organized events, and lifted me up every day. I absolutely could not have done this without you. It has been a real joy to meet hundreds of Ward 3 residents through this endeavor. I am greatly encouraged by the thoughtful conversations I had with so many of you. Malden is truly lucky to have such remarkable residents. I hope to continue our conversations in the coming months and years. I believe that many of us are ready and eager to see changes in Malden and I look forward to working together on this.

My campaign manager Amanda Smith did an amazing job giving me a crash course in running for office and providing her sage counsel all along the way. I am enormously grateful that she agreed to take me on and to help me navigate these rough political waters. I absolutely could not have done this without her.

And finally I must acknowledge my husband David. He far exceeded any expectation I had of spousal support throughout this campaign. I feel truly blessed to have such a loyal, hard-working, and loving partner.

As we approach the holiday season, I am feeling very grateful—grateful for all the opportunities of this campaign from understanding more deeply how our government works to meeting so many neighbors in Ward 3 to forging new friendships with my remarkable volunteers.

Thanks to all of you. Though we were not victorious in the end, I am hopeful that we can all continue to work together for a better Malden.

With gratitude,
Candace

Good morning all,
Election day is finally here. Ward 3 residents have a choice for how you will be represented. It has been a real pleasure to meet so many of you during this campaign. I have appreciated your willingness to listen to my ideas and share your concerns. I would be honored to serve as your Councillor--championing your issues at Council meetings and addressing your concerns in your neighborhood.

I am asking for your vote today for a change in Ward 3 and in City Council.

Once again, John Matheson has chosen to spread misinformation -- this time in his recent flyer to voters.

Matheson claims there is one consensus point of view among residents in the neighborhood surrounding the Malden Hospital site. He is incorrect. I've knocked on many doors and spoken with numerous residents in the neighborhood for months and I have been struck by the wide range of opinions on what should happen with the site.

Matheson then implies that I support a specific number of units being built on the hospital site -- and he does so by doctoring a quote from me that was published in the Boston Globe. In fact, I do not support a specific number of units being built at the hospital site. And my quote in the Boston Globe included no numbers at all. Matheson decided to make that up and misinform Ward 3 residents.

Distorting the truth seems to be a pattern for Matheson. I think Ward 3 voters deserve better.

Being in touch with the residents you represent and really taking the time to listen to their voices is, I believe, a hallmark of a strong City Councillor. That's the kind of City Councillor I would be. That's the kind of Councillor we all deserve.

I hope voters in Ward 3 will consider this latest incident and cast their vote for real change on November 7.
