The national political landscape has become quite depressing. The current occupant in the White House has led with bullying, lies, empty promises, and self-importance. I am saddened that this approach is now seen as "normal" and has become part of our local political landscape as well. Given that reality, I was delighted with our City Council this week when they unanimously and articulately denounced the "shameful" resolution proposed by Councillor Matheson that was based on the inaccurate and misleading reporting by Fox News. I am grateful to all the Councillors who spoke and for their willingness to stand up to the use of "fake news" for political gain. All of them brought a bit of hope into my heart!
Another spot of hope this week came at the Mayor Candidate Forum. I was pleased to see that Mayor Christenson remained positive, responded to the questions asked, and stuck with facts. In contrast, Councillor Matheson often ignored the question to use the time to find new ways to distort, exaggerate, and generally denigrate Gary's record of accomplishments. Politics is very unpleasant and depressing enterprise these days. It has truly become a thankless job. I am grateful that we continue to have strong, honest, open-minded folks willing to run for local office who focus on their hopes and ideas rather than choosing to distort and bully. Hats off and good luck to the folks that will be on my ballot: Mayor Gary Christenson, Councillor at Large Debbie DeMaria, Councillor at Large Steve Winslow, and Ward 3 Councillor Amanda Linehan. Thank you all for running and may you all win!
