Today, the Malden Police Department proudly welcomed our newest officer, Officer Kyle Couto, who was officially sworn in with family, loved ones, and supporters by his side.

Officer Couto recently graduated from the MPTC East Falmouth Police Academy and now begins his career serving the Malden community. We congratulate him on this important achievement and wish him a safe, successful, and rewarding career.

Today’s ceremony was also a bittersweet one, as it marked the final swearing-in ceremony conducted by Chief Glenn Cronin before his retirement. During the ceremony, Chief Cronin recognized Captain Marc Gatcomb, who will be sworn in as Malden’s next Chief of Police on July 1st.

As Officer Couto begins his career with the department and the City prepares for a transition in leadership, today’s ceremony served as a reminder of the strong foundation of professionalism, dedication, and community commitment that defines the Malden Police Department.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads of the Malden Police Department, past and present, and to fathers everywhere.

Today, we celebrate the fathers who lead, support, protect, and inspire their families each and every day. We also recognize those who are spending part of today away from their loved ones while serving others and answering the call.

Thank you to all the fathers who make sacrifices both at home and in service to our community. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.

On Monday, the Malden Police Department was proud to participate in World Elder Abuse Awareness Day at the Resource Fair hosted by the Malden Senior Community Center. We were honored to join community partners, local businesses, service providers, and advocates who are committed to supporting and protecting our seniors and vulnerable residents.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day highlights the importance of recognizing and preventing elder abuse in all its forms, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, isolation, financial exploitation, and fraud. By raising awareness, providing education, and strengthening community partnerships, we can help safeguard older adults and ensure they have access to the resources and support they need.

City of Malden (Official) works closely with Mystic Valley Elder Services and other community organizations to assist seniors and families facing concerns related to abuse, neglect, self-neglect, financial exploitation, scams, and other forms of victimization.

We encourage residents to stay informed and vigilant:

• Be cautious of unsolicited phone calls, emails, text messages, and social media communications.
• Never share personal, financial, or sensitive information with anyone you cannot independently verify.
• Be alert to individuals who create a sense of urgency or pressure you into making immediate payments or decisions.
• Avoid clicking suspicious links, scanning unknown QR codes, or opening unexpected attachments.
• If something feels wrong, trust your instincts and consult a trusted family member, caregiver, financial institution, or law enforcement officer.

If you suspect elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation, please report it. If someone is in immediate danger or requires emergency assistance, call 911.

For non-emergency concerns, contact the Malden Police Department at 781-397-7171.

Residents may also reach out to Mystic Valley Elder Services for support, guidance, and reporting resources.

If you have been targeted by a scam or online fraud, report it at IC3.gov. Reporting these incidents helps law enforcement identify trends, investigate criminal activity, and prevent others from becoming victims.

The Malden Police Department congratulates Captain Marc Gatcomb on his appointment as Malden’s next Chief of Police.

We look forward to his continued leadership and service to our department and community.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to Chief Glenn Cronin for his decades of dedicated service, leadership, and commitment to our department and community.

Mayor Gary Christenson announced that Captain Marc Gatcomb has been selected as Malden's next Chief of Police following an extensive vetting process. He will succeed Chief Glenn Cronin, who is retiring on June 30 after 32 years of dedicated service to the City of Malden.

Captain Gatcomb began his career with the Malden Police Department as a cadet in 1987 and has served the community for nearly four decades. Since 2016, he has led the Criminal Investigations Division, overseeing complex investigations and contributing to multi-agency initiatives, including an FBI task force focused on human trafficking.

Congratulations to Captain Gatcomb on his appointment, and thank you to Chief Cronin for his distinguished service to the Malden community.

The Malden Police Department appreciates opportunities to engage with organizations that are invested in our community and committed to making a positive difference. We thank YWCA Malden TASK for the invitation and for bringing people together through this important project.

Community partnerships remain an important part of building a stronger Malden for everyone.

We know what some of you are already wondering:

"What's his name?"

"He must be cooperating."

"How come you never tell us everything?"

Fair questions, but the purpose of this post is not to make someone famous for all the wrong reasons. The purpose is to highlight the work being done by your Malden Police officers every day to keep illegal drugs off our streets and our community safe.

On Friday evening, a motor vehicle stop conducted by Malden Police resulted in the arrest of a 34 year old Malden man on motor vehicle violations and drug trafficking charges. During the investigation, officers recovered more than 200 grams of a substance believed to be co***ne.

Officer David Kessler led the investigation, with assistance from other members of the department. Outstanding work by everyone involved.

Sometimes the most important part of the story isn't who got arrested. It's what was taken off the street.

PSA: Active Investigation

On June 2, 2026, during the early morning hours, the Malden Police Department assisted the Medford Police Department and Massachusetts State Police with an investigation that originated outside the City of Malden.

As a result of that investigation, at least one juvenile was taken into custody. The incident concluded in a motor vehicle crash in the area of Medford Street and James Street in Malden.

Because this remains an active investigation and is being led by outside agencies, members of the media are asked to direct any questions to the Massachusetts State Police or the Medford Police Department.

At this time, there is no information to suggest any ongoing threat to public safety related to this incident within the City of Malden.

Public Safety Advisory

This afternoon, the Malden Police Department assisted outside law enforcement agencies with an active criminal investigation that originated outside the City of Malden.

As part of that investigation, outside agencies were following a vehicle connected to their case and requested assistance from Malden officers after the vehicle entered Malden. The operator of the vehicle was reportedly wanted on outstanding warrants.

Malden officers responded to the area of Main Street and Bickford Road to assist. During the attempted stop, the operator entered the vehicle after noticing a marked Malden cruiser and fled the area, striking an unmarked cruiser from an outside agency. A uniformed Malden officer had exited his cruiser to assist and was nearly struck by the fleeing vehicle.

The vehicle continued to flee and was later abandoned in another city. The operator and passenger reportedly fled on foot.

At this time, there is no information to suggest an ongoing threat to public safety. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact law enforcement.

Because this remains an active and ongoing investigation, no further details will be released at this time.

🍕🚓 A sincere thank you to New Craft Collision of Malden for generously providing lunch to the officers and staff of the Malden Police Department today.

New Craft Collision treated our department to an outstanding lunch from Pisa Pizza, and the food was absolutely delicious!

Everything was greatly appreciated by our officers and staff.

We are extremely grateful for the continued support from our local businesses and community partners. Thank you again for your generosity and support of the Malden Police Department and the City of Malden. 💙

A few officers. A lot of little ducklings. And one important mission.

Today, members of the Malden Police Traffic Unit and Malden Detectives were proud to help the children of Rockland Montessori Academy safely make their annual walk to and from Fellsmere Pond for the beloved “Make Way for Ducklings” event.

For us, community policing is not always about lights and sirens. Sometimes it’s about slowing traffic, holding crosswalks, waving to excited kids, and helping create memories they’ll carry for years.

Safe to say… the ducklings were well protected today.
