In May, we observe National Police Week—a dedicated time to honor the courageous law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

National Police Week serves as a period of reflection and remembrance, when officers stand alongside the families of the fallen to reaffirm the meaning behind the badge. It reinforces the reality that every shift carries both risk and purpose. This week offers law enforcement professionals an opportunity to pause, pay tribute to those who gave their lives in service, and feel the support of a grateful nation that recognizes the weight of their commitment. For many, the observance is deeply personal—names etched in memorials represent partners, friends, and family. That connection strengthens their purpose to serve, protect, and carry forward the legacy of those who are no longer with us.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and designated the week in which it falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress, this observance pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while safeguarding their communities.

We invite you to join us in showing your support for our law enforcement personnel during Police Week 2026 as well as honoring one of our fallen. Sergeant Richard C. Swan, Sr. who gave his life in the line of duty on November 16, 1988. He served 21 years as a patrol officer and sergeant with our department before his death at the age of 44.

Today is a tough one.

I lost a friend, a brother in blue, and someone I went through the academy with. Matthew Roberts wasn’t just a Denver Police Officer, he was the kind of person you were proud to stand next to in uniform.

We started this journey together, learned the job together, and carried the same commitment to serve. Matthew had a way of making the hard days lighter and the good days even better. He was someone you could count on, both on and off the job.

This profession brings a bond that’s hard to explain unless you’ve lived it. Losing one of our own hits different. It reminds you how important this job is, but more importantly, how important the people beside you are.

My thoughts and prayers are with Matthew’s family, friends, and everyone at Denver PD. We’ve lost a good one.

Rest easy, brother. We’ve got it from here.

GOOD MEDICINE
Kindness Citation MALIN-00002/3

Eric and Dulce volunteer with Tayas Yawks. Tayas Yawks in the Klamath language translates to ‘medicine bag,’ and good medicine is exactly what they bring to the community. They bring the medicine trailer to Malin and offer services to the community that desperately need them.

Tayas Yawks offer peer support, job resources and culturally specific services to people struggling with addiction and people returning from incarceration or addiction treatment. They focus on family values, culture and community.

After being issued a Kindness Citation Eric shared, “To be honest it felt rather good going out and trying to better the communities every day can be exhausting. Being noticed and recognized by others in the community reminds me why it's important to be active and observant of what's going on and help where you can.”

Keep impacting your community one kind act at a time!
