The Malmo Volunteer Fire Department held the annual banquet Saturday evening. There was a good group of current members, honorary members, family, and special guests. There were firefighters that retired this year that were given their helmet shields and tags. Awards given to several members for their achievements in 2025 and anniversary milestones honored.

Burn ban has been lifted. Thank you for everyone's understanding during the dry conditions we had. With that said, remember to always call in your burn to Saunders County Dispatch BEFORE lighting as each fire district chief can deny burning from time to time due to wind or dry conditions as they come up.

Update on Burn Ban: The governor is returning the authority of local fire chiefs to waive the statewide burn ban by issuing a burn permit.
The move comes as drought and wildfire risks across the state have eased.

We are truly honored and grateful for the incredible support from our community—it means more to us than words can express. Congratulations to all of our raffle winners, and a special thank you to everyone who purchased or ordered a commemorative 125-year Malmo Fire Department t-shirt to help celebrate this milestone. Your generosity helps us continue to serve and protect our community. We’re already looking forward to seeing everyone again on June 6th for our Annual Fish Fry and Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed!

The Malmo Volunteer Fire Department is proud to celebrate 125 years of dedicated service to our community, a legacy that began in 1901 and continues strong today. For over a century, our members have answered the call with courage, commitment, and a deep sense of duty. To commemorate this milestone, we’ve created custom anniversary t-shirts, now available to the public for $30 each. These shirts will be on sale at our 27th Annual Pancake Feed and Breakfast, hosted on March 29th, 2026, at the fire hall located at 112 Center Ave, Malmo, NE 68040. Proceeds from these sales will directly support the ongoing needs of the Malmo Fire Department, helping us continue to protect and serve for generations to come. We are grateful for the community’s continued support as we honor our past and look ahead to the future.

Another fire out west. Please understand this is why there is a state wide burn ban. There is no burning allowed of any kind. The conditions are EXTREMELY DRY everywhere! Prayers for all residents and first responders out there.

A fast-moving wildfire south of Hyannis has triggered evacuations for Ashby and Hyannis. Highways 2 and 61 are closed as the fire continues to spread.

Due to the increased threat of wildfires as a result of the dry and windy conditions across the state, I have issued a statewide burn ban — effective immediately — to help reduce the potential for additional wildfires in Nebraska.

My executive order prohibits burning and will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on March 27.

Throughout March, join us in supporting our fellow firefighters at Lincoln Fire & Rescue in Nebraska. For every FD Coffee Club purchase, $2 is donated, and for every FD Shirt Club purchase, $5 is donated to help meet the ongoing needs of their firefighters.

Malmo fire was called out near 22 and L to help a resident with a tree that had caught fire but had spread to other trees and fence line. Good cooperation between our members, assignments as needed, and good communication we were able to get fire under control in a reasonable amount of time. The hollow trees are always a nightmare for the fire departments to put out.
