Due to the possibility of severe weather today, the monthly outdoor warning siren test has been postponed until next Wednesday May 13th.

Outdoor warning sirens are meant to be heard outdoors. You should always stay weather aware and make sure you have multiple ways to receive alerts.

Don't forget to practice what to do in the event of a tornado warning!

Moving to shelter quickly is easier when everyone knows where to go, whether in your home, business, or outdoors.

...ELEVATED WILDFIRE DANGER POSSIBLE THURSDAY...

Expect south to southwesterly winds around 10 to 20 mph by
Thursday afternoon with some gusts in excess of 30 mph at times.
Very dry air will be located over the area with minimum afternoon
RH values between 15 to 30 percent. This will make it possible
for wildfires to ignite and spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is
not recommended.

If a wildfire is observed, report it by dialing 911 or by
contacting the Arkansas Forestry Division at (800) 468-8834.

On Saturday, during the storms the 911 center received multiple 911 calls. During the time period of 10 am to 11 am, they received 92 911 calls and from 10:45 am to 11:00 am they received 52 in that 15 minute time period. I can not say enough kind words. These men and ladies went above and beyond during the time of need. While most dispatchers live within Hot Spring County, they had to put their own homes and families to the side and focus on the needs of the county. Everyone who works in the 911 center experienced the call overload during the storms and I thank them for the hard work and dedication. While most see the fire and Law Enforcement and other emergency personnel out in the streets, these are the unsung hero's who who work behind the scenes.

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will diagonally pass across North America, with two-thirds of Arkansas along the path of totality and 94% of the state in the swath of coverage. This may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many since the last total solar eclipse in Arkansas was in 1918, and another will not appear until 2045. Arkansas will be a prime viewing spot, drawing scientists, researchers, photographers, stargazers, and eclipse travelers.

Approximately 98% of Hot Spring County is in the Path of Totality meaning there will be 100% coverage of the sun. A small area in southeast HSC (Lono) is not in the path of totality but will still see 99.8% coverage of the sun.

Here's What We Know: (we've been planning for 2 years)

-None of this is to incite fear, just to advise, so HSC citizens can be prepared.
-98% of Hot Spring Co. will see complete darkness (totality) for 2-4 minutes.
-We have been told to plan for up to 15,000 additional visitors just in HSC.
-ALL state, county, and municipal public safety agencies will have extra staffing to handle this influx.
-Based on reports from the 2017 Eclipse states, TRAFFIC will be the biggest issue.
-All hotels and campgrounds are sold out or will be soon.
-As of now, ALL HSC schools will be CLOSED.

What can you do?

-Get fuel and groceries the week before in case of shortages (locally).
-Stay home the day of the eclipse to avoid traffic.
-If you must travel that day plan for extended travel time (3X-4X normal).
-Get eclipse glasses and enjoy the show. (The library will have them starting 3/8/24)

Please, please, pretty please, refrain from burning today and tomorrow.

With low humidity and wind gusts of 30-35 MPH any small fire will quickly become out of control.
