04/01/2024
On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will diagonally pass across North America, with two-thirds of Arkansas along the path of totality and 94% of the state in the swath of coverage. This may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many since the last total solar eclipse in Arkansas was in 1918, and another will not appear until 2045. Arkansas will be a prime viewing spot, drawing scientists, researchers, photographers, stargazers, and eclipse travelers.
Approximately 98% of Hot Spring County is in the Path of Totality meaning there will be 100% coverage of the sun. A small area in southeast HSC (Lono) is not in the path of totality but will still see 99.8% coverage of the sun.
Here's What We Know: (we've been planning for 2 years)
-None of this is to incite fear, just to advise, so HSC citizens can be prepared.
-98% of Hot Spring Co. will see complete darkness (totality) for 2-4 minutes.
-We have been told to plan for up to 15,000 additional visitors just in HSC.
-ALL state, county, and municipal public safety agencies will have extra staffing to handle this influx.
-Based on reports from the 2017 Eclipse states, TRAFFIC will be the biggest issue.
-All hotels and campgrounds are sold out or will be soon.
-As of now, ALL HSC schools will be CLOSED.
What can you do?
-Get fuel and groceries the week before in case of shortages (locally).
-Stay home the day of the eclipse to avoid traffic.
-If you must travel that day plan for extended travel time (3X-4X normal).
-Get eclipse glasses and enjoy the show. (The library will have them starting 3/8/24)
