While our tours are often booked up a week or so in advance, did you know that you can also catch some Esherick on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art? Currently on view in the PMA's Workshop of the World exhibition are two pieces Esherick created for the Curtis Bok House -- this incredible radio and phonograph cabinet and an equally unusual a wall sconce. Why not explore a little Esherick in the wild! 😉

Pictured here is the radio and phonograph cabinet in front of the "garage" where it could be rolled out of the way as needed!

This week's helps us remember that as much as August in Pennsylvannia can be difficult to bear (it's a wet heat) it's a glorious time to be a plant. So much light and so much growth! How are you enjoying your August?

"To me the theme Breaking Ground sounded like WEM was searching for something new, which is what I was doing when I came up with Creep. I didn’t want it to look like anything I’d ever made, or anyone else had made. The contrarian in me is really tired of seeing the same chairs, over and over again. Creep was a product of curiosity, exploration, experimentation, and getting a little freaky." -- Haniel Wides

In our second Notes from the Studio feature to highlight the prizewinning artists in Breaking Ground: WEM’s 32nd Annual Juried Woodworking Exhibition, we are delighted to share our conversation with Haniel Wides. Haniel’s piece Creep was awarded second place by this year’s jurors and has been piquing the curiosity of viewers at WEM all summer long. The prizewinning works are on view in our Visitor Center through September 20, 2026, with the complete show available as a virtual exhibition on our website.

It's not too late to pick up a copy of Rockwell Kent's 'Wilderness' and join us for our September Book Club meeting! 📚

As a budding artist in the 1920s, Wharton Esherick actively looked up to the painter, printmaker, and illustrator Rockwell Kent. When Esherick was first experimenting with the medium of printmaking, he acquired a copy of Rockwell Kent’s book Wilderness (1920) to study his woodblock illustrations. Kent’s book—a twentieth century transcendentalist tale in the vein of Thoreau and Emerson—documents a seven-month adventure taken with his son to live in the remote Alaskan wilderness, and explores the isolation of wilderness, connection to nature, and ideas of self-sufficiency. During the meeting, we’ll be exploring Esherick’s copy of Wilderness, books that Esherick also illustrated, and ephemera from Esherick and Kent’s common exhibitions.

🛶🌊This week's is one that hopes you too are getting out of the heat and into the water!

Wharton made these two prints for "Rhymes of Early Jungle Folk" and later printed them both on a single page.
