An original carriage step in Larchmont Manor. There are several still left there!

A carriage step is a block of stone placed near the edge of the street usually in line with the front doorway of a home which functions as a stepping stone to help passengers climbing in and out of horse-drawn carriages.

Do you know where this one is? Post your guess in the comments!!

🗽🍎 21 miles to New York 🗽🍎

Larchmonters- ever notice this plaque that sort of resembles a grave stone? Ever take the time to read it or wonder what it’s all about?

This plaque is from 1804 and was originally placed only about a quarter of a mile East from its current location on what was then the Westchester Turnpike. The Westchester Turnpike roughly followed the same route as Boston Post Road but was different enough that when Boston Post Road was officially constructed and named, they ordered all new road markers.

The Board of Trustees of the Village of Larchmont took great care in resetting the stone in 1941 where it remains today.

When you walk through our lovely village, as Jack from Mary Poppins would say, “there’s a different point of view awaiting you if you just look up!”

DID YOU KNOW?

In the mid-1930s, a Murray Avenue student asked her father, lyricist J. Frederick Coots, to write a song for her to perform at a school musical. He wrote “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, which was then performed for the very first time on the stage of Murray Avenue School.

Fred Coots also wrote “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and “Love Letters in the Sand”.
