In May 2001, Nolin Lake State Park opened to the public. The 5,795-acre lake, created from the impoundment of the Nolin River in 1963, and the 333-acre park are located along the northern edge of Mammoth Cave National Park in Edmonson County. Nolin Lake State Park is the perfect escape, featuring 32 campsites with hookups for water and electricity, 40 primitive campsites, a beach, a boat ramp, sho

wer and laundry facilities, a playground, and around 9 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Nolin Lake provides great fishing for guests as well, with an abundance of bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye. The area surrounding Nolin Lake State Park is topographically diverse. From the Great Sinkhole Plain in the south to the Dripping Springs Escarpment in the north, and from the peaks of tall hills to the Nolin River and Green River valleys, Edmonson County is an astoundingly beautiful place. Named for Captain John Edmonson of Virginia, who was killed at the Battle of the River Raisin during the War of 1812, Edmonson County is part of "cave country" and is home to Mammoth Cave, the longest known cave system in the world. Since opening for tours in 1816, millions of visitors have come to explore the more than 400 miles of known cave passages. Established in 1941, Mammoth Cave National Park now covers 53,000 acres across three counties: Edmonson, Hart, and Barren.

Nolin Lake State Park Remains Closed Due to Safety Concerns and Extensive Flood Damage

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 18, 2025) –In order to protect public safety and assess the repair of park infrastructure, Nolin Lake State Park will remain closed due to extensive flood damage and unsafe conditions following months of historic high-water levels.

Due to flooding in April, water has not yet fully receded from many areas of the state park. Key portions of the park, including trails, the beach, buildings and the boat ramp, remain inaccessible or unsafe due to flooding, hazardous substances, submerged debris and structural concerns. The boat ramp is still underwater, and the beach is not visible.

On June 9, a site visit was conducted by representatives from the Finance and Administration Cabinet (FAC), construction teams and Parks Facilities Management. Although officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) were scheduled to attend, their assessment was postponed and is now planned for June 30.

Nolin Lake State Park falls under a federal FEMA disaster declaration that applies to the broader county. As a result, any actions related to assessment, cleanup and repair must comply with FEMA protocols. Additionally, repair and recovery efforts are being guided by FAC and insurance carriers to determine what damage will be covered through those channels.

“Our priority is to ensure that any reopening is done safely and responsibly,” said Kentucky State Parks Commissioner Russ Meyer. “We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we assess the damage, work through FEMA and state requirements, and begin the process of restoring this beautiful park.”

State leaders are developing a timeline for phased recovery. While some areas of the park may be able to return to operation sooner, other areas, including the campground and critical facilities, may require a longer-term restoration effort.

The public is urged to stay off park property during the closure and refrain from unauthorized use, including boating, as the entire park remains unsafe and unmonitored.

Nolin Lake updates will be provided through the Kentucky State Parks website and other official communication channels.
Kentucky is home to 44 state parks, including 17 resort parks and 13 golf courses. For the latest updates and information on events, visit parks.ky.gov.

While we know everyone wants an update on Nolin Lake State Park, unfortunately our status is unchanged. Our park has suffered major damages due to flooding and storms. The outlook of further impounding rainfall this week is very alarming.

Please understand that safety is of the highest importance and until water levels reduce and stabilize, time has to allow for inspections and repairs to be made. We will remain closed until further notice.

This closure includes: the entrance to park, all campgrounds, trails, boat ramp and beach.

Please do not ignore the closed signage. We will post updates as they come along. Until then, please be patient and observe rules for your safety.
