Jury Convicts Lonnie Kauk On All Counts Of Domestic Violence

On April 18, 2025, a Mono County jury found Lonnie Kauk guilty of all counts, including three felonies and one misdemeanor. Mr. Kauk was convicted of felony domestic violence that caused great bodily injury, as well as felony criminal threats, felony vandalism, and misdemeanor domestic violence. Mr. Kauk faces a maximum sentence of 8 years, 4 months in state prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 23, 2025.

Mr. Kauk was convicted of strangling his girlfriend unconscious after an argument on June 22, 2023. Before the strangulation, he threatened to kill the victim’s dog in front of her, her father who was in the hospital at the time, and ultimately, the victim herself after he gouged her eyes out so that he was the last person she saw.

Strangulation has been identified as one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence and unconsciousness can occur within seconds, death within minutes. According to the Training Institute on Strangulation, a woman who has suffered a non-fatal strangulation incident with their intimate partner is 750% more likely to be killed by the same perpetrator.

The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the victim for having the courage to testify and hold Mr. Kauk accountable for his actions. His convictions would not have been possible without her bravery to come to court and tell the truth.

Paul Samuel Lent Sentenced to 48 Years to Life for Multiple Sexual Acts With Children

Paul Samuel Lent of Susanville, CA, 44, was convicted of committing four felony counts of various sexual acts with two separate children between 2006 and 2016. The crimes took place in Mono, Lassen, and Shasta counties. Mr. Lent was sentenced on January 14, 2025, to life in prison and must serve a minimum of 48 years before being eligible for parole.
In early 2024, a report was made to the Mono County Sheriff’s Office of sexual abuse of a child that occurred nearly 20 years prior. Upon further investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney, it was discovered there was another, more recent victim in other counties in California. With cooperation from the Lassen County District Attorney and Shasta County District Attorney, all crimes were prosecuted in Mono County resulting in the life sentence.
Two of Mr. Lent’s heinous convictions include oral copulation and digital pe*******on of a child who was approximately only two years old. The Mono County District Attorney’s Office acknowledges and thanks the victims, and in the case of the youngest victim who thankfully does not remember the horrific actions of Mr. Lent, the victim’s parent’s, who had the strength and courage to report the abuse to law enforcement. Their bravery resulted in the ability to get a dangerous predator off the streets and in prison for the rest of his life.

In October of 2023, law enforcement began an investigation alleging lewd and lascivious acts upon a child under the age of 14. Further investigation identified the alleged suspect as Juvenal Prieto-Gomez, a 68-year-old resident of Mammoth Lakes, CA.

Juvenal Prieto-Gomez currently has a full extradition felony arrest warrant for sexual intercourse/sodomy of a child under the age of 10 and lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age. Law enforcement believes Juvenal Prieto-Gomez may have possibly fled to Mexico to avoid apprehension and prosecution.

Former MLPD Chief Al Davis Pleads Guilty to DUI and Hit and Run:

Former Mammoth Lakes Police Chief Al Davis pled guilty on June 18, 2024 to one misdemeanor count of Driving Under the Influence and one misdemeanor count of Hit and Run. Sentencing is scheduled for July 9, 2024 in Bridgeport where it is anticipated he will be sentenced to 3 years probation and the standard terms and conditions of a first offense DUI along with substantial community service and restitution for property damage. Mr. Davis currently lives in Florida.

On January 6, 2023, Mr. Davis was arrested after being involved in multiple collisions and a determination was made that he was under the influence of a combination of alcohol and unknown drugs. Mr. Davis’ blood alcohol level at the time of his arrest was .01, below the legal limit for driving of .08. After analyzing Mr. Davis’ blood, detectable concentrations of prescription medications were found; however, no illegal substances were discovered. Mr. Davis performed poorly on his field sobriety tests and it was established that the combination of the prescription drugs, mixed with alcohol, created a situation where Mr. Davis was not able to safely operate a motor vehicle.
