Are the bears out yet?

They never really go away. Black bears do not have a true hibernation cycle. In Mammoth Lakes treat every day like the bears are out.

• Secure and bear proof your trash.
• Never leave food, coolers, or scented items in your car.
• Close your car windows and lock the doors.
• At home, keep your doors and windows shut and locked.

If dumpsters are e too full, contact your property manager or Mammoth Disposal.

Our wildlife is more than just bears. These three grebes were blown off course and ended up in town. Grebes require a waterway to take off and once they land on ground cannot take flight. These three birds were picked up by local good Samaritans and kept in their bathtubs until we could drive them down 395 to unfrozen ponds.

Why we encourage people to lock their doors and windows: This video was sent to us late last fall. The sender is a local resident who thought she had locked the car. There was no food or scented items to attract the bear, he just wanted to make sure. Luckily the bear was spooked off before he had a chance to get all the way in the car and getting stuck, which happened to him earlier in the year. When bears are stuck in cars, mayhem ensues.
