April showers bring May... Chickens? Chick Days at MCL are here! We're gearing up for a dinosaur-themed summer reading program with the closest living relative of the Tyrannasaurus Rex – the chicken. Thanks to a grant from the Children's Literacy Foundation, we're ready to lead you through the stages of hatching eggs with hands-on workshops and chicken-themed story times, all while a dozen real eggs incubate in the Children's Library. Workshops will take place on each Saturday in May, to be led by Children's Library Assistant and Chicken Farmer Karen.

The program schedule will be as follows:

May 9, 12 - 1:30 pm: Meet the Eggs
May 16, 11 - 12:30 pm: Egg Candling
May 23, 11 - 12:30 pm: Build a Brooder Box
May 30, 11 - 12:30 pm: Hatch Day!

On this day in Vermont history: Ira Allen, Ethan Allen's younger brother, is born in 1751. Like his brother, he was a land speculator, became a member of the Vermont Legislature, was the first treasurer and Surveyor General for the state, and donated the land for what is now University of Vermont.

However, he fell into debt and left the state, eventually dying in Philadelphia, where he was buried.
