Southern New Hampshire Services RSVP SNHS provides provides a variety of services to low income residents in all 65 towns and three cities in Hillsborough and Rockingham counties.

The Mission of SNHS is to provide activities designed to assist low-income participants, including the elderly poor, to secure and retain meaningful employment, attain an adequate education, and make better use of available income; to ameliorate the causes of poverty within the community; to meet urgent and immediate individual and family needs, including health, nutrition, housing and employment-

related assistance; and to address the problems and barriers which block the achievement of self-sufficiency. SNHS typical activities include providing:
Energy Assistance and Home Weatherization
Administration of Head Start & Early Head Start and Child care programs
Adult Education
ESOL/English as a Second Language Classes
Job Training and Employment-related assistance
Health and Nutrition
Housing SNHS Volunteer Services Department operates two programs the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) Healthy Habits. About RSVP
RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, is a free program through the Corporation of National Community Service for adults 55 and better. Southern New Hampshire Services hosts more than 400 RSVP volunteers in Hillsborough County. RSVP staff strives to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities, for adults 55 and better, that meet local needs and respond to priorities of national significance. Current focus areas include disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures and veterans and military families. About CATCH Healthy Habits
This unique inter-generational program engages adults 50 and older to educate children in kindergarten through grade 5 about nutrition and fitness. The program addresses adult and childhood obesity by providing educational sessions on healthy eating and physical activity. The CATCH program runs in after school, summer and other recreational programs. Volunteer teams of 3-5 adults present a series of lessons that involve a healthy snack, health education lesson, and fun physical activities. In 2015 the program expanded to start offering nutrition and fitness lessons for adults.

General information

Southern New Hampshire Services is a Community Action Agency. Community Action Agencies are local private and public non-profit organizations that carry out the Community Action Program (CAP), which was founded by the 1964 Economic Opportunity Act to fight poverty by empowering the poor in the United States. CAAs are intended to promote self-sufficiency. They depend heavily on volunteer work and federal funding, which now comes primarily from the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program.

Our Story

Southern New Hampshire Services, Inc. (SNHS) is a private non-profit corporation chartered in the State of New Hampshire, May 21, 1965 to serve as the Community Action Agency for Hillsborough County in compliance with the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 From 1965 through 1969, SNHS was known as the Community Action Agency for Hillsborough County and served the City of Nashua and the twenty-nine towns. In 1969 the organization became the Community Action Agency for the City of Manchester as well. In 1974 the agency’s name was changed to Southern New Hampshire Services, Inc.

In July, 2011, Rockingham Community Action (RCA), the Community Action Agency serving Rockingham County, was merged with Southern New Hampshire Services. SNHS had served as the administrative agent for RCA since October, 2008. As a result of this merger SNHS now provides services to residents all 65 towns and three cities in Hillsborough and Rockingham counties.
