On this day in 1962, captured U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers was freed by the Soviets in exchange for Colonel Rudolf Abel, a Soviet spy convicted in the U.S. of espionage. They were traded at the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin, known as the "Bridge of Spies."

Powers was piloting a U-2 reconnaissance mission for CIA when he was shot down over the Soviet Union. He was held for one year, nine months and ten days after his capture. In April 1965, Powers received the Intelligence Star, a rare award given by CIA to officers for voluntary acts of courage or outstanding achievements rendered with distinction.
