On June 9, voters will be asked whether to continue the existing 0.75% sales tax for future fire and emergency facilities.

What It Funds➡ If approved, funding would support:
• Fire Station 3 & Emergency Operations Center
• Fire apparatus & equipment
• Future updates to existing stations
• Land for a future Fire Station 4

No New Tax➡ This measure does NOT create a new tax. It continues an existing sales tax already being collected.

Revenue would be redirected beginning in 2028, once the Starion Sports Complex is fully paid off—approximately 13 years ahead of schedule.

NW Growth➡ Mandan continues to grow—especially in the northwest portion of the city. Fire Station 3 would help ensure emergency services keep pace with development.

Strategic Planning➡ The City of Mandan’s 10 year strategic plan identified Fire Station 3 as a top priority for public safety.

Response Time Goals 🚒The Mandan Fire Department’s goal: Less than 4 minutes, 90% of the time.

Current Challenges➡ Travel time from Station 1 to Red Trail Elementary is approximately 11 minutes—and can exceed 13 minutes when crews are already responding elsewhere.

***Note: Mandan Rural Fire Department's mill levy election is for residents served by Mandan Rural Fire District, NOT those served by City of Mandan Fire Department.***

🎉FIREFIGHTER SPOTLIGHT🎉

Firefighter Matthew Hennessy is front and center in the spotlight this week.

Matt - My name is Matt Hennessy, and I have proudly served as a Fire Fighter/ EMT for the past 15 years. I was born and raised in Bismarck but often joke that I have been adopted as an honorary “Mandanian”. The Fire Department has afforded me the opportunity to serve the Mandan Community, and the relationships I have made over the years are priceless.

Outside of the Fire Department I enjoy spending time with friends and family, watching any sporting event that is on TV and golfing whenever I can find the time. Six years ago I married my best friend, Libby, and I have two wonderful stepchildren.

I am grateful for all the relationships I have built in Mandan while also serving the community. The fire service has taught me so much in life, and am looking forward to what lies ahead.

The Mandan Fire Department is proud to announce the release of our 2025 Annual Report.

This report highlights a year of growth, service, training, community engagement, and operational excellence. From emergency response and firefighter development to public education and strategic planning, our members continued to answer the call whenever our community needed us most.

In 2025, our personnel responded to more than 2,300 incidents, completed thousands of hours of training, expanded specialty rescue capabilities, welcomed new firefighters, and continued planning for the future needs of our growing community.

“This report reflects the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of every member of the Mandan Fire Department,” said Fire Chief Mitchell Bitz. “Whether responding to emergencies, educating the public, training for the next challenge, or supporting one another, our firefighters continue to demonstrate what it means to serve this community with pride. I could not be more proud of the work accomplished this year.”

We invite you to take a look at the report and learn more about the men and women who proudly serve the City of Mandan.

The Mandan Fire Department recently took another major step forward in our water rescue capabilities. Following the acquisition of our new rescue boat, members are now completing Swiftwater Rescue Technician training to ensure we are prepared for emergencies on the Missouri River and other waterways throughout our response area.

Many people don’t realize how dangerous the Missouri River can be. Even during normal conditions, river currents can move between 3 and 7 miles per hour which is fast enough to quickly overpower even strong swimmers and carry them downstream before they realize what’s happening.

A huge thank you to our instructors from Bismarck Rural Fire Department for sharing their knowledge, experience, and professionalism throughout this training. Strong regional partnerships like these help ensure we are all better prepared to serve our communities when seconds matter.

🎉FIREFIGHTER SPOTLIGHT🎉

This week the spotlight is on part time firefighter, Ben Buchmiller.

Ben joined the Mandan Fire Department over 6 years ago in March 2020 as a part-time, on-call firefighter. His empathetic service to his community has built lifelong trust, supports his fellow team members, mentors new firefighters, and builds technical skills to be the best he can be.

His background is in construction management and works at Bobcat as a Pricing Analyst for aftermarket parts. In his spare time Ben enjoys kayaking on the Heart River, swimming at the aquatics center, biking around town, and running with his two vizslas. Ben ran a marathon back in January by running up and down all the hills in Mandan.

Ben is currently serving in the role of Senior Warden at the Mandan Masonic Lodge #8 as a freemason. He also participates in charity events across the state as his own mandalorian character from Star Wars through the international Mando Mercs Costume Club. Ben and his fiancee Hilary have their wedding in June.

On the June 9 election ballot, there will be a question asking voters about continuing the existing 0.75% sales tax in Mandan after the Starion Sports Complex is paid off (expected to be paid off in 2028 – 13 years ahead of schedule). If continued, the sales tax would go towards funding Fire Station 3, fire apparatus + equipment, updating the existing fire stations, and purchasing land for a future Fire Station 4.

Northwest Mandan Growth ➡Mandan continues to grow—especially in the northwest portion of the city. Fire Station 3 would help ensure emergency services keep pace with development.

Strategic Planning ➡The City of Mandan’s 10 year strategic plan identified Fire Station 3 as a top priority for public safety.

Response Time Goals ➡ The Mandan Fire Department’s goal: Less than 4 minutes, 90% of the time.

Current Challenges ➡Travel time from Station 1 to Red Trail Elementary is approximately 11 minutes—and can exceed 13 minutes when crews are already responding elsewhere.

Opportunity to Learn More ➡Mandan Fire Department is hosting one more public input meeting on Monday, June 1 at Fire Station 1 (110 Collins Ave) at 6 p.m.

🎉FIREFIGHTER SPOTLIGHT🎉

This weeks spotlight is on B-Shift Captain Devon Beehler

Devon - I am second generation firefighter with the Mandan Fire Department. I began my career in 2008 as a junior firefighter with the MFD, earned a degree in fire technology and administration in 2012, and worked briefly full-time with Minot Fire before joining Mandan full time in April 2014. I have spent nearly my entire career in the training division and im passionate about developing well-trained, professional firefighters. I was promoted to B‑Shift Captain in January 2024.

Raised around the firehouse and mentored heavily by my father (who is set to retire in June), I try to bring deep practical experience and strong leadership to my role. On my days off i work at an off‑road dealership, and at home im kept busy by my wife, two young children (ages 3 and 5), and our dog. I enjoys grilling, swimming, time with family and friends, and tinkering in the garage where the music is always playing. I take pride in my colleagues and the standards they uphold in serving the community.
