Growth must NOT outpace infrastructure! Thank you, Parish President Mike Cooper, for putting our roads, drainage, and quality of life FIRST. Responsible growth is smart growth — and St. Tammany residents deserve nothing less.
I have closely monitored the re-zoning submissions of the Isadora and Esperanza developments since they first came before the Zoning Commission in May. Throughout this process, I have reviewed the proposals, listened to the concerns of residents, and carefully considered the potential impacts these developments could have on our community.
As Parish President, I will exercise my right to VETO the recent council decisions that would have paved the way for approximately 800 new homes near LA 1077 and Ronald Reagan Highway (U.S. 190) in the Goodbee area.
My responsibility as Parish President is to protect the quality of life of the people who call St. Tammany Parish home. New high-density developments in this area would have placed thousands more vehicles on our already strained state highways and increased drainage concerns in a floodplain.
Over the past several years, we have made record investments in our infrastructure, overhauled our development practices to be more aligned with our citizens’ values, and worked to ensure that growth is managed responsibly. These efforts have been focused on building a stronger St. Tammany for the future while protecting the communities and neighborhoods that make our parish such a special place to live.
I support responsible growth, but it must be balanced with sufficient infrastructure and the needs of our residents. High-density developments in areas with planned, but not yet designed or funded infrastructure improvements, would have undermined the progress we have worked so hard to achieve.
