Second Suspect Arrested in 2023 Greer County Burglary Case

Matthew Stanton, 38, of Texas, was taken into custody this week in Texas and extradited to Greer County, Oklahoma, where he will face charges stemming from a July 2023 residential burglary north of Mangum.

Stanton and Angel Sires, 22, also of Texas, were previously wanted in connection with the burglary. Both individuals were charged with Second Degree Burglary and Grand Larceny following an investigation conducted by the Greer County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff McMahan submitted affidavits to the District Attorney’s Office, resulting in the issuance of arrest warrants.

Authorities believe the two individuals were traveling through the area when the burglary occurred before subsequently traveling to Colorado. Stanton was previously taken into custody in Colorado on unrelated charges. Sires has since been arrested, charged, and convicted in connection with the case.

Sheriff Steven McMahan stated, “This case is an example of our commitment to following investigations through, regardless of how much time has passed or where the individuals involved may be located. We owe it to the victims and the citizens of Greer County to pursue these cases and work toward accountability. I appreciate the work of our investigators and the cooperation involved in bringing this case to a resolution.”

With Stanton now in custody in Greer County and Sires having been arrested and convicted, the Sheriff’s Office appreciates the continued support of the public and the efforts of everyone who assisted in the investigation.

Our SROs serve a purpose that goes far beyond law enforcement. They are mentors, trusted resources, and familiar faces who help create a safer environment where students can learn, grow, and succeed.

Just as we are proud to serve the students and staff of Mangum Public Schools, we are equally proud to invest in the safety and well-being of the Granite community.

As Sheriff, I believe some of our most important work happens long before a call for service ever comes in. It happens in our schools, in the relationships we build, and in the trust we earn from the next generation.

Our greatest responsibility isn’t just protecting our community today—it’s investing in the young people who will become our community tomorrow.

Last night the Greer County Sheriff’s Office had the privilege of celebrating two outstanding members of our team at the Oklahoma Sheriffs’ Association Conference, where their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving others were recognized at the state level.

Detention Deputy Dusty Johnson was honored with the Life Saving Award in recognition of his actions and commitment to preserving human life. In law enforcement, we are often called upon to respond in moments when every second matters. The willingness to step up, act decisively, and make a difference when someone’s life is on the line is what public service is all about. Dusty’s recognition reflects the importance of that commitment and the impact one person can have on another’s life.

Dispatcher Mike Rogers was awarded the Oklahoma Sheriffs’ Association Dispatcher of the Year, a well-deserved honor recognizing the critical role he plays in public safety. Dispatchers are the calm voice in the middle of chaos, often serving as the lifeline between someone in crisis and the help they desperately need. Mike’s professionalism, quick thinking, and ability to provide critical guidance during an emergency demonstrate just how important our dispatchers are to every call for service.

These awards represent more than individual accomplishments. They reflect the character, dedication, and heart of the people who serve Greer County every day. We are proud to have Dusty and Mike as members of our team, and we are grateful for the difference they make in the lives of the people we serve.

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Oklahoma State Parks Ranger Jason Laird, who tragically passed away following an accident while off duty.

Jason served at Quartz Mountain State Park and dedicated over two years of service to the people of Oklahoma.

Today, our State Parks family stands together in remembering Jason and honoring his service.

Our deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and fellow colleagues during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Ranger Laird. Your watch has ended, but your service will not be forgotten.

We’re proud to unveil the new look of our Greer County Sheriff’s Office Mangum School Resource Officer Patrol Unit!

This unit proudly represents the Mangum Tigers while also highlighting the return of the DARE program to Mangum Public Schools.

But this vehicle represents much more than a new design. It represents our commitment to being present, accessible, and involved in the lives of our students, faculty, and families.

Our SROs are there to help keep our schools safe, but their role goes far beyond security. They build relationships, mentor students, teach important lessons, listen when a student needs someone to talk to, and work alongside our teachers and administrators to create a safe and positive school environment.

“Our greatest responsibility isn’t just protecting our community today, it’s investing in the young people who will become our community tomorrow,” said Sheriff McMahan. “We want our students to know that their Sheriff’s Office is here for them, that we care about them, and that we will continue to stand beside our schools, our teachers, and our families. Major progress taking place inside the new Greer County Law Enforcement Center. The old concrete floor has been removed. Soon the plumbing will be ran and new concrete poured.
