Over the last thirty years, I have been sworn-in to elected positions from school board to the Town Council to the County Legislature. Yesterday’s swearing-in to the North Hempstead Town Council was my 15th. They are joyous occasions. But they are also serious, and solemn events where elected officials publicly swear to serve the people to the best of their ability. Yesterday I renewed my commitment to my residents to do everything I can to make a difference in their lives. Thank you for your support!

Brian Thomas, a devoted husband and father of two young girls, is in urgent need of a kidney donor. Brian is very clear about his situation saying, “If I don’t get that kidney, I won’t be here. I’m going to die.”
Brian is bravely battling collapsing FSGS, a rare but severe and aggressive form of kidney disease.
“Thirteen months ago, I was told I could be in complete kidney failure in 6 to 12 months,” said Thomas. “We are in the 9th inning now.”
Twice in the last year, Brian, his wife Tamara, their 3 year old daughter, Ayanna, and her 2 year old sister, Savanna, thought a suitable donor had been found only to have their hopes dashed at the last minute. But they aren’t giving up. And we can’t either.
Let’s help find a kidney for Brian!
You can help raise awareness about Brian’s story by sharing this newsletter with anyone and everyone you can.
And to explore becoming a donor yourself, please visit the website at kidney4BT.com, contact the family directly at [email protected], or contact the transplant coordinator: Ms. Castro at (215) 273-5074

I want to thank everyone who supported our toy drive and came together to make this a joyous holiday season for children. Thanks to your generosity, over 1,300 toys were donated, bringing smiles and holiday cheer to so many families.
Our supporters include Bobby Kumar from Toys for Tots, the Theissen Foundation, LI Composting, ZECC, ReWorld, the dedicated staff of the Westbury School District, and the many members of our community who contributed to bringing happiness to a child.

Please join me in bringing joy this holiday season by purchasing a toy for a child. Last year we collected 1,000 toys and we’re hoping to exceed that record. For your convenience, an Amazon registry has been created where toys can be purchased to support this wonderful initiative. All toys will be wrapped and taken to the Yes We Can Community Center (141 Garden St, Westbury, NY), where they will be given by Santa to every child in attendance following the tree lighting on Friday, December 12th, at 5 pm. Let’s make sure no child leaves without a toy. Buy one today and join us next Friday for the tree lighting!

If you think affordability and food scarcity are not issues, think again. Last night, Senator Siela Bynoe, Legislator-elect Viviana Russell, and I held our annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway. When we first started this event, we collected and distributed 100 turkeys, and everyone who came left with one. Over time, the number of donated turkeys grew to 150. Last year, our sponsors contributed 250, and we set a record by giving them all away. No one left empty handed.

This year, we collected 400 birds and thought we might finally have more than we needed. Instead, every turkey was gone within 45 minutes. The genuine need of the recipients, along with their gratitude, was etched on their faces. We ended the night eight turkeys short, but those families will receive their turkeys today.

I want to thank our student volunteers, the AKA Sorority, staff from the Westbury School District, and our generous sponsors: Island Harvest, Omni Recycling, Jamaica Ash, the Joe Stasi family, Green Acres Mall, and Community Connections LI.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Tuesday night's Book Bag Giveaway at Bunky Reid Park was a tremendous success. Eight hundred young scholars received school supplies and were treated to pizza and ice cream. This joyful event was made possible through a partnership with Senator Siela Bynoe and the PBA, to whom I am truly grateful.

Affordability is an issue on Long Island and across the country. With inflation on the rise, it’s likely to get worse before it gets better. That’s why Senator Siela Bynoe and I, in conjunction with the PBA, are doing our part to help offset the cost of getting students ready for school this September.
Join us for a School Supplies Giveaway at Bunky Reid Park TOMORROW (August 26, 2025) from 6 PM to 8 PM!
We'll have free book bags, food, and fun! We hope to see you there!

Serving on the Westbury Board of Education has been the most rewarding professional experience of my life. I have had the privilege of serving on and off since 1991, accumulating a total of sixteen years of service. The last few years, in particular, have been among the most accomplished, with improved academic performance among our students and significant investments in our facilities, all while lowering the tax rate by 5%.

Last night, surrounded by my wife, daughter, and three grandchildren, I was sworn in for the ninth time. I am grateful for my family's support and for the voters’ confidence in re-electing me to a position I find so fulfilling.

I have the same concerns shared by Councilmember Mariann Dalimonte as posted below.

🚧 WARNING: ROAD BLOCKED 🚧

My office has been receiving multiple inquiries each week seeking information about road paving. I have not been able to provide these residents with any detailed information, and this is why…

For years, Council Members have played an active role in shaping the Town of North Hempstead’s road repaving schedule — because we know our districts, we know the roads, and we listen directly to you, our residents.

In the past, the initial paving list was created by the Highway Department through a thoughtful process that included an analysis of 311 service requests, emails from residents, and an on-the-ground examination of the physical condition of roads in each Council District. I would then receive the draft list early enough to personally drive each road, assess its condition, and ensure that constituent concerns were being prioritized.

That collaborative and transparent process has been completely shut down this year.

Since March, I’ve sent multiple emails to both the Highway Department and the Department of Public Works requesting information about the 2025 paving schedule. Eventually I was told that the Supervisor’s office would be making the final decisions.

So, I reached out to the Supervisor’s office — multiple times.

They have yet to respond.

This is not how good government works. Cutting elected representatives out of the process and keeping residents in the dark is unacceptable.

North Hempstead deserves a government that is open, responsive, and focused on community needs — not one that makes decisions behind closed doors.

It’s time for the administration to do better.

I hope you will join me for a celebration of Haitian Flag Day this Sunday, May 18, the day in 1804 when The Republic of Haiti earned its independence from France and flew its flag for the first time. It has as much significance to Haiti and Haitians around the world as the Fourth of July has to the United States. The festivities will take place on Prospect Avenue between Sohmer Place and Grand Street from 3pm to 7pm and will include food, music, and entertainment.

I have had a nearly lifelong love for baseball. None of my children shared my enthusiasm for the game. But I am holding out hope for the next generation. On Saturday my granddaughter played her first Little League game and legged out the first hit of her career! She’s clearly a chip off the old block!
