Pollinator populations, including the beautiful monarch butterfly, are in decline due in part to habitat loss, fragmentation, climate change, use of pesticides, and invasive plants. The eastern monarch butterfly population has declined by more than 80% over the past two decades. You can help these invaluable species by incorporating simple practices that benefit pollinators and the environment in your own landscape. This includes reducing or eliminating pesticide use, planting native plants, and managing invasive species. Any community member that maintains a landscape, including residents, businesses, schools, non-profits and places of worship, can take the pledge! Through Labor Day 2026, all dog adoption fees will be waived at the North Hempstead Animal Shelter!

North Hempstead’s Animal Shelter is a hidden gem led by a compassionate staff determined to find local pups new and loving homes. The staff at the Shelter and the volunteers at the Shelter Connection work so hard each and every day to rehabilitate, train, and socialize shelter dogs so they are ready to assimilate into homes and with families across North Hempstead. There are so many incredible dogs ready for a home.

North Hempstead is once again partnering with AARP to host Defensive Driving classes at Clinton G. Martin Park this fall...

North Hempstead is once again partnering with AARP to host Defensive Driving classes at Clinton G. Martin Park this fall. They will teach key tactics including managing your speed, expecting the unexpected from other drivers, keeping yourself alert and distraction-free, practicing a safe following distance, and driving according to road and weather conditions. The classes will be held on the following dates from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.:

• Saturday, September 19
• Saturday, October 10
• Saturday, November 21
• Saturday, December 12

The cost is $25 for AARP members and $30 for non-members. Those interested in attending should bring a check payable to “AARP” on the day of the class. No cash will be accepted. Attendees should bring their driver’s license and a bagged lunch, and AARP members should also bring their AARP cards. CALL 311 or 516-869-6311 TO REGISTER.

Spotted Lanternfly Season is here. These nasty little creatures aren’t just annoying bugs with an impressive vertical jump. They are VERY destructive to local trees and agriculture. Their feeding processes stress plants, making our trees susceptible to disease. Additionally, Spotted Lanternflies produce a substance known as honeydew which encourages harmful mold and leads to plant death. The insects have been seen throughout Long Island and will likely continue to be seen through late November. People may also spot egg infestations starting in September.

Please keep your eyes peeled for the return of the invasive and destructive Spotted Lanternfly and kill them on site. Learn more here: https://dec.ny.gov/nature/animals-fish-plants/spotted-lanternfly

• Inspect outdoor items such as firewood, vehicles, and furniture for egg masses.
• If you visit other states with SLF, be sure to check all equipment and gear before leaving. Scrape off any egg masses.
• Destroy egg masses by scraping them into a bucket of hot, soapy water or a baggie/jar of hand sanitizer.
