Gillis Beach Bodysurfing Association

Gillis Beach Bodysurfing Association Promoting Bodysurfing Contests and Products Bernard's High Schools in the beach portion of Los Angeles.

Gillis Beach Bodysurfing Association grew from a central sandy beach location in Playa del Rey and the young men who attended Westchester High or St. Summers were spent swimming in the Pacific Ocean and riding waves. Many were in the Junior and Senior Lifeguards of the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks. Skill, competition, and practice in riding waves with only wave knowledge and

a pair of fins promoted the popularity of bodysurfing. South swells prevailed lapping the mid portion of the Santa Monica Bay and the series of jetty's constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers to retain the sand, gave a chance for sand bars and shaped waves to break and hold their shape. Riding the waves now could be done from left or right and allowed the bodysurfer to travel further but at an angle to the shore or like board surfing but without the board.
