The United States is two and one half centuries old today. Hundreds of millions of people across those intervening years have lived within her borders and called themselves Americans. From her inception, America was founded on the shoulders of revolutionaries who were diverse in their backgrounds, beliefs, loyalties and identities. From 13 colonies to 50 states, we've grown into one, incredible, more perfect union.

The American fire service, and the labor union that represents it, reflects that same journey from many into one. Bound by the purpose to serve their fellow countrymen, members of the IAFF across the United States, including Manhattan's Local 2275, rise today to celebrate our nation's milestone by serving. In firehouses from sea to shining sea, professional firefighters stand by with duty to others as their purpose.

It's the end of an era for Local 2275! Congratulations to David Kordyak on his retirement. Dave gave nearly three decades of dedicated service to the citizens of Manhattan, and his presence on the job will be missed by all who worked alongside him. Best wishes in your next chapter, Dave — you've earned it.

Today we pause to recognize Juneteenth — a federal holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, the day the last enslaved Americans in Texas learned of their freedom.

It is a day of historical weight, cultural celebration, and continued reflection on the promise of equality for all.

As a union, we are committed to the dignity and worth of every person we serve and every member who serves alongside us. That commitment doesn't take a day off — but today gives us reason to reaffirm it.

Last night Manhattan City Mayor Adamchak recognized the actions of four of our members for their recent outstanding service to the community. In part, Mayor Adamchak stated:

"Tonight we recognize the outstanding actions of Captain Kyle Voth, Driver AJ Brinkman, Driver Cole Hiatt, and Firefighter Mason Herzog of the Manhattan Fire Department for heroic efforts during a residential structure fire in the early morning hours of April 14th, 2026.

These firefighters responded to reports of a house fire with possible occupants trapped inside. Upon arrival, they encountered a rapidly developing fire with heavy smoke and flames showing from the second floor. Two individuals were on the porch roof and were able to self rescue. One of those individuals reported that another person remained trapped on the second floor.

With conditions rapidly deteriorating, Captain Voth, Driver Brinkman and Firefighter Herzog advanced up the stairs of the building into intense heat and dense smoke, using a hose line to hold back the fire as they searched for the victim. Their training, composure and determination enabled them to quickly locate the unconscious occupant and bring that person safely downstairs.

Once outside, the Manhattan Fire Department personnel, working alongside Riley County EMS, immediately began life saving care. As a result of their swift and coordinated actions, the victim survived and has since made a full recovery. Medical personnel later indicated that this individual was only moments away from succumbing to their injuries.

Because of the courage, skill, and teamwork demonstrated by these firefighters, a life was saved. This incident represents the very best of the Manhattan Fire Department, and the service it provides to our community every day. We are deeply grateful to the professionalism, dedication and bravery shown by Captain Kyle Voth, Driver AJ Brinkman, Driver Cole Hiatt, and Firefighter Mason Herzog. On behalf of the City of Manhattan, we commend and thank them for their extraordinary service and for their unwavering commitment to protect the lives and safety of our community and our residents."

IAFF Local 2275 is incredibly proud of Captain Voth, Driver Brinkman, Driver Hiatt, and Firefighter Herzog. Their actions that morning reflect what this job truly demands — and what our members answer every single shift. We congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition and are honored to call them brothers.

Today, Local 2275 pauses to honor those who gave everything in service to this country.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend — it's a solemn reminder that the freedoms we enjoy were purchased at an immeasurable cost. To the men and women who laid down their lives in uniform, and to the families who carry that loss every single day, we offer our deepest respect and gratitude.

As firefighters, we understand the weight of a commitment to protect others — but we will never minimize the sacrifice of those who made the ultimate one on foreign soil, far from home, in defense of something larger than themselves.

Honor the fallen. Remember their names.

Manhattan firefighters rescued two people early Tuesday morning after a residential building caught on fire. 🔥
