A farewell ceremony was held Saturday for 450th Movement Control Battalion U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers preparing to deploy. Soldiers, family, and friends gathered for a casing of the battalion colors and speeches from Brig. Gen. Brandi Peasley, Commander, 451st Expeditionary Sustainment Command, and Mr. John Schoen, state of Kansas Army Reserve Ambassador.

The Juneteenth Day of Observance officially became the eleventh federal holiday in 2021 and is the first new federal holiday since the recognition of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday in 1983.

Juneteenth recognizes the end of slavery and extended to Black Americans the nation's promise of freedom and liberty.

While the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Lincoln, legally freed slaves throughout the Confederate States, Texas resisted for two years. Major General Gordon Granger assumed command over the Military District of Texas and established military control, issuing General Order No. 3, formally enforcing provisions of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas for the first time.

The U.S. Army remembers its role in the liberation of enslaved persons throughout the Confederacy as one of its core legacies.
