Yesterday, the Manhattan community gathered at the Union Pacific Train Depot to honor Dr. Roger and Virginia Reitz and their family with a dedication ceremony and plaque unveiling.

Dr. Reitz has served Manhattan and Kansas as a physician, City Commissioner, State Representative, Senator, and USD 383 School Board Member. He also has a lifelong love of trains and a longstanding connection to the Union Pacific Depot, supporting its restoration.

Thank you to the Reitz family, the Manhattan Municipal Band, Mayor Susan Adamchak, Jackie McClaskey, and everyone who attended to recognize the Reitz family’s lasting contributions to Manhattan.

Most of all, thank you to Dr. Roger and Virginia Reitz whose lifetime of service and dedication have aided and inspired so many.

We invite you to visit the depot, learn about its history, and honor Dr. Reitz’s legacy by carrying forward his commitment to public service.

Happy National Dog Day! We love it when four-legged fur family and friends enjoy local parks.

Reminder: when walking your dog, please scoop the p**p and dispose of it in the trash. (Leaving the bag on the side of the trail, in the grass, or anywhere other than the trash absolutely does NOT count as disposal.)

Pet waste can wash into storm drains during rain events, carrying bacteria and nutrients into local waterways, and it makes for a very unpleasant flip flop experience.

A small bag makes a big difference for cleaner streets, parks, and streams. We have pet waste stations posted in many locations at each park to make things easy.

8/21/2026 Scenic Drive Shoulder Repair Update

We are wrapping up the work on Scenic Drive to repair a section of heaved shoulder near Ledgestone. Crews excavated the road shoulder, fixed the base layer, and today spread fresh asphalt. The area should be ready to reopen by Monday.

It's getting that dark and ominous feeling outside...

Noisy but sub-severe thunderstorms are currently moving southeast out of Nebraska, and should continue to move across northern KS throughout the morning hours. The main risk for severe weather today still looks to be later this evening as storms redevelop.

Manhattan drivers: please SLOW DOWN in school zones when the yellow lights are flashing, even if the area is also a work zone.

When school zone signals are flashing, the speed limit is 20 mph. Please stay alert and watch for children walking, biking, riding scooters, etc.

Remember to use extra caution around construction crews and changing traffic patterns. (Which means you need to use all the caution, because work zones are literally everywhere right now.)

Kansas Department of Transportation, in coordination with the City of Manhattan, is planning pedestrian and sidewalk safety improvements along Fort Riley Boulevard/K-18.

This project will extend the sidewalk on the north side of Fort Riley Boulevard/K-18, improve pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Fort Riley Boulevard/K-18 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., and remove the acceleration lane at that intersection.

Drivers should expect lane shifts and lane closures on Fort Riley Boulevard between Westwood Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. during construction.

Work is expected to begin in late August or September 2026 and is anticipated to take six to eight months to complete.
