If you’ve peeked out your window recently and noticed colorful lines or tiny flags along the street, grass, or sidewalk, you might be wondering what on earth is going on in the neighborhood! Before you dig, Pennsylvania law requires that 811 be contacted so underground utilities can be located and marked. Utility locators then mark the approximate location of underground utility lines.

Here is a handy color code guide so you can decode what's underneath:

🚽 Protect Your Home's Sewer Line with These Simple Tips! 💧

A few simple habits can help prevent costly sewer backups and keep wastewater flowing where it should.

🚫 Don't flush wipes (even those labeled "flushable"), paper towels, feminine hygiene products, or rags.

🥓 Never pour grease, cooking oil, fats, or coffee grounds down the drain. Let grease cool and dispose of it in the trash instead.

🥔 Be mindful of what goes into your garbage disposal. Fibrous or starchy food waste like potatoes can contribute to clogged drains.

🛁 Use drain screens to catch hair and soap scum before they enter your plumbing.

🌳 Keep trees and large shrubs away from your sewer lateral whenever possible, as roots naturally seek moisture and can damage underground pipes.

On private property, the homeowner maintains:
🏡 The water service line from the curb stop to the home
🏡 The sewer lateral from the home to the connection with the public sewer main
🏡 All plumbing and pipes inside the home
