๐ŸŒฟ Protecting Our Water, Protecting Manheim. ๐ŸŒItโ€™s World Water Week 2026!

Safe, clean water doesn't just happenโ€”it takes continuous monitoring, watershed protection, and smart infrastructure investments. Our local drinking water comes from deep within the Epler formation aquifer, and the treated water we return helps keep the Chiques Creek Watershed thriving.

How you can help protect our local water supply:

๏ธ๐Ÿ‘‰ Properly dispose of household chemicalsโ€”never pour them down storm drains.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Repair running toilets or dripping faucets promptly.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Use fertilizer sparingly to prevent runoff into groundwater.

Together, we can ensure safe water for today and for future generations in our community! ๐Ÿ’งโœจ

๐Ÿ’ง August is National Water Quality Month! ๐Ÿ’ง

Ever wonder what it takes to bring clean, high-quality water straight to your tap 24/7? It takes round-the-clock testing, careful treatment and filtration, and daily protection of our local water sources.

While our team works behind the scenes every day to ensure your water meets strict state and federal safety standards, protecting our community's water supply is a team effort. Here are 4 simple ways you can help:

๐Ÿงน Pick up after pets: Rain can wash pet waste into storm drains and nearby streams, carrying harmful bacteria with it.

๐ŸŒฑ Use lawn chemicals sparingly: Excess fertilizers and pesticides wash into waterways during rainstorms and affect water quality.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Dispose of chemicals safely: Never pour paint, motor oil, or household cleaners down the drain or into storm gutters. Use an appropriate household hazardous waste collection site.

๐Ÿ’Š Flush wisely: Expired medications should go to a pharmacy drop-box or community take-back event โ€“ not down the toilet.

๐Ÿ’ง Want to see exactly what we are testing for? Check out our latest annual Water Quality Report to see how we monitor and protect your supply: https://mawsa.org/current-information/water-quality/

Consumer Confidence Report (CCR): an opportunity to share about the measures taken to assure quality and safety. Each year we compile the results into a mailer.

๐Ÿ‘€ Spotted mystery spray paint or flags near your yard? Donโ€™t worryโ€”itโ€™s not local street art! ๐ŸŽจโœจ

If youโ€™ve peeked out your window recently and noticed colorful lines or tiny flags along the street, grass, or sidewalk, you might be wondering what on earth is going on in the neighborhood! Before you dig, Pennsylvania law requires that 811 be contacted so underground utilities can be located and marked. Utility locators then mark the approximate location of underground utility lines.

Here is a handy color code guide so you can decode what's underneath:

๐Ÿ”ต Blue: Water Lines (Thatโ€™s us at MAWSA! ๐Ÿ’ง)
๐ŸŸข Green: Sewer Lines (Also us! ๐Ÿšฝ)
๐Ÿ”ด Red: Electric Power Lines & Cables
๐ŸŸก Yellow: Gas, Oil, or Petroleum
๐ŸŸ  Orange: Communication & Cable TV Lines
โšช White: Proposed Excavation Area

Planning a project on your own property that involves digging? Always dial 8-1-1 or visit https://pa811.org a few business days before you plan to dig. Itโ€™s free, easy, keeps your neighborhood safe, and prevents accidental utility outages!

๐Ÿšฝ Protect Your Home's Sewer Line with These Simple Tips! ๐Ÿ’ง

A few simple habits can help prevent costly sewer backups and keep wastewater flowing where it should.

๐Ÿšซ Don't flush wipes (even those labeled "flushable"), paper towels, feminine hygiene products, or rags.

๐Ÿฅ“ Never pour grease, cooking oil, fats, or coffee grounds down the drain. Let grease cool and dispose of it in the trash instead.

๐Ÿฅ” Be mindful of what goes into your garbage disposal. Fibrous or starchy food waste like potatoes can contribute to clogged drains.

๐Ÿ› Use drain screens to catch hair and soap scum before they enter your plumbing.

๐ŸŒณ Keep trees and large shrubs away from your sewer lateral whenever possible, as roots naturally seek moisture and can damage underground pipes.

If you AND your neighbors are experiencing sewer problems at the same time, the issue may be in MAWSA's public sewer main. Give us a call, and we'll investigate. If the issue is on private property, we can help point you toward the appropriate next step.

If you're experiencing recurring clogs, sewer odors, gurgling drains, or sewage backing up into your home, the problem may be in your home's plumbing or sewer lateral.

A little prevention today can help protect your homeโ€”and keep our community's sewer system flowing smoothly for everyone.

๐Ÿ’ง Did You Know? Knowing Where a Problem Is Can Save You Time and Money! ๐Ÿšฐ

Your water and sewer service is a partnership between MAWSA and the property owner. Understanding who maintains each part of the system can help you know what to do if a problem occurs.

MAWSA maintains:
โœ”๏ธ Water mains
โœ”๏ธ Sewer mains
โœ”๏ธ Water service lines up to the curb stop

On private property, the homeowner maintains:
๐Ÿก The water service line from the curb stop to the home
๐Ÿก The sewer lateral from the home to the connection with the public sewer main
๐Ÿก All plumbing and pipes inside the home

If you notice low water pressure, a leak in your yard, slow drains, or a sewer backup, knowing where the problem is located can help determine the next step. Not sure where the issue is? Give MAWSA a call. Even if the problem turns out to be on private property, we're happy to help you determine where to start and point you in the right direction.
