Last evening, past and current members as well as others, gathered to honor Larry Groff (“Pappy Smurf” or “Groffy”) for his 60 years as an Active Member. (2026 marks 61 years)
In his 6 decades of service, Larry has served as Chief, Assistant Chief, and Treasurer, as well as in many other leadership and officer-level positions, and he currently serves as our Chaplain, supporting our members and families with spiritual care and prayer.
Making the evening especially memorable is that we managed to keep most of the event as a surprise. Larry knew we were going to enjoy a company picnic, but he had no idea we invited his family, friends, and community members, as well as other special guests.
Tracy Young-Brungard, Office of the State Fire Commissioner, presented Larry with a Certificate of Service and a letter from the Fire Commissioner, as well as a Challenge Coin.
LuAnn Fahndrich, Administrative Assistant to Representative Mindy Fee, presented Larry with an Official House of Representatives Citation.
Manheim Borough Police Department presented Larry with a plaque and Challenge Coin.
Fire company members presented Larry with a plaque commemorating his years of service as well as announcing that a duplicate metal plate and a Papa Smurf decal will be affixed to our new Tanker that's currently in production, anticipated to be available for service in 2027. What makes the plaque even more special, is that it was made by Larry's grandson, Craig.
We hope you enjoy the pictures of our special evening! Videos of the presentations will be added to the comments as Facebook does not allow us to post more than one video per post. We hope that you are inspired by Larry's commitment to serve the community and consider becoming a volunteer yourself.
