Last night at our quarterly Fire Chiefs Assn. meeting, we presented two long-serving Chief Officers with a brick to be placed in the Memorial Garden at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center in their honor. Eric Bachman and Bill Hall were both recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Lancaster County Fire Service.

Eric Bachman was recognized for his more than 30 years of serving as the Hazmat Planner / Hazmat Administrator for the Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency. In this role he oversaw the annual reports and plans of SARA Title facilities in the county, the Tier 2 reports and fund collections, creator of specialized safety plans in the county, and manager of the LEPC. In addition, Eric is a Life Member of Eden Fire Company, serving from 1982-2022, and as Fire Chief from 1992-1995. Eric is now the Fire Marshal for Manheim Township Fire Rescue, a role he has filled since June 2022. Eric lives in West Hempfield Twp. and also volunteers with West Hempfield Fire & Rescue.

Bill Hall was recognized for his role as the Protective Services Program Instructor for the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center from 2004-2025. During that time he educated more than 1,000 students, leading students to become certified firefighters and encouraging those who weren't volunteers yet, to join their local fire company. Bill has always shown a deep passion for recruitment of volunteer firefighters, whether with FDMJ, or throughout the county. Bill has been a volunteer firefighter since 1979, first with Friendship Fire Company in Mount Joy, and then later with Fire Department Mount Joy after their formation in 1993. He has served in many leadership roles in the fire department, including President, Vice-President, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, and Fire Chief. Bill also served as the LCFA President from 2003-2006, during which time the first new Pierce fire engine was bought. Bill became a state certified fire instructor in 2003, and in 2024 earned the international professional designation of "Chief Fire Official" from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

Eric and Bill are both Charter Members of the Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association from 2003 when the Association was formally organized.

Great news from Mountville Fire Company No. 1!

On the evening of 3/28, Company 7 was dispatched to assist West Hempfield Fire/Rescue with a reported crash involving a motorcycle. E7-2 was one of the first arriving units behind the 76 Chief. What we saw was one of the most horrific motorcycle accidents any of our tenured crew has seen. The outlook from the EMS providers was grim.

Fast forward just over 5 weeks. We'd like you to meet Dan, the motorcycle rider. We had the honor to do something that rarely happens, and that was to meet Dan and his family. The engine crew from the crash took Dan and his family dinner as part of their meal train. From not breathing in the back of the ambulance enroute to the hospital to home, walking and talking, he is truly a miracle and had someone watching over him. Dan, it was an honor to meet you and your family, and from the Officers and Members of Company 7, we wish you continued success on your road to recovery!

We celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW) this week, from April 13th to 19th. This week-long event is dedicated to recognizing the vital role of public safety telecommunicators, who answer 911 calls and dispatch emergency responders. We appreciate their hard work and dedication to the helping protect our communities. As we do each year, the Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Assn. has donated gift cards to the express our sincere thanks for the efforts of all those who work at the Lancaster County Emergency Communications Center. Congratulations Chief Brubaker on an outstanding career and service to your community!

On Saturday February 15th Pequea Valley Fire Department held our annual members appreciation banquet. At this year's banquet we were able to take some time and honor former Deputy Chief Doug Brubaker for his service to the company and community. Doug recently moved out of the area and stepped down as the Deputy Chief after being a Chief officer for 30+ years combined between Pequea Valley Fire Department and the Kinzer Fire Company prior to the consolidation.

As a member of Kinzer Fire Company prior to the consolidation, Doug has over 40 years of service with the department. Doug started climbing the ranks many years ago serving 1 year as an Engineer, 1 year as a Lieutenant, jumping to Assistant Chief for 4 years, then Deputy Chief for 10 years before finishing out as Chief of Kinzer Fire Company for the next 15 years.

When the consolidation of the Kinzer Fire Company and Gordonville Fire and EMS started Doug was adamant that it was time for the younger generation to start taking over the reins and offer to help serve the department with offering support to the younger generation of inspiring officers and step down as the head Chief and serve as the Deputy Chief, the role he has been serving in for the last year and a half.

During his time with Kinzer Fire Company and Pequea Valley Fire Department, on top of serving as an officer, Doug had several other accomplishments over the years:
1. Established a detailed internal maintenance program for apparatus and equipment to make sure they remained in top notch operational capacity which ultimately helps cut back out of service time and cost for outside service/repairs.
2. Served on multiple apparatus committees and put into service the current Engine 405, Squad 405, UTV 405, and our recently sold Tanker 405.
3. Served on the Firemen's Relief board for several years
4. Extremely active in fundraising and public education/school events
5. Served on the steering committee for the consolidation of Kinzer Fire Company and Gordonville Fire and EMS into Pequea Valley Fire Department.
6. Recently obtained his EMT and committed to volunteering 1 night a week and a weekend rotation on the ambulance.

We are happy to report that despite Doug moving out of the area Doug has committed to staying on his weekly EMS shift and weekend rotation as an Ambulance driver, assisting with fundraisers and catching as many fire calls as he can while in the area!

Deputy Chief Brubaker was presented with a plaque that has two Chief helmet fronts mounted to reflect his time as Chief of the former station 45 Kinzer Fire Company and Deputy Chief of station 40 Pequea Valley Fire Department.

SHORT NOTICE - ASSISTANCE NEEDED

From East Hempfield Chief Fire Official John Kottmyer: there will be a procession for slain West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte tomorrow morning as his body is transported to Lehigh Valley. They will be leaving the York County Coroner's Office, located near the York County Prison, right off the Mount Zion exit on Route 30 between 7:00-7:15am, traveling east on Route 30 to Route 222 North. Police departments will be assisting by closing eastbound Route 30 and northbound Route 222 as the procession nears. They have asked for fire companies to assist with paying their respects by positioning apparatus and personnel on the overpasses on top of Route 30 and Route 222. All help is greatly appreciated to show respect to Officer Duarte.

We don't know anything beyond this information - we have not seen an official request for assistance. Sorry for the late notice and thanks for serving for those companies participating.
