HazMat 2 Environmental Fire Rescue Company HazMat 2 is a team of highly skilled volunteers, who are committed to protecting Pennsylvania against the effects of a hazardous materials release.

Haz-Mat 2 is a team of specially trained volunteers, who are committed to protecting Lancaster County Pennsylvania against the effects of a hazardous materials incident. In 1983, four local fire companies (Eden, East Petersburg, Neffsville and Southern Manheim Township) joining together to form a Hazardous Materials Response Team. They purchased the special equipment and protective clothing requir

ed and began training some of their members in the skills that are needed to control chemical emergencies. This team of volunteers became know as HAZMAT 2-9. In 1986, the Federal Government mandated (through “SARA” Superfund Amendments and Requthorization Act) which is commonly know at the “Community Right-To-Know” Law, that local governments provide residents with information about the hazardous materials present in the community. They were also required to provide emergency response capabilities to accidents involving those materials. Thanks to the foresight of the founding fire companies, Lancaster County was already well prepared to meet these requirements. In 1993, Haz-Mat 2 and the County government formalized its commitment to serve Lancaster County by signing a five-year contract to provide the emergency response required under the “SARA Act”.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Haz Mat 2 Environmental Fire Rescue Company, Inc.has been a pioneer in hazardous materials response to the residents of Lancaster County, PA for 44 years. In 2025, the Lancaster County Commissioners opted to contract with Lebanon County for these emergency services, thereby ending our service. In recent months, we have explored various strategies to re-establish our presence in the community and sustain organizational viability. However, the Board of Directors has determined that there is no clear pathway forward for us to provide service to our residents.

Lebanon County has supplied Hazardous Materials (Haz Mat) response services to Lancaster County over the past year. In view of these circumstances, Haz Mat 2 believes that it would be in the best interest to our County’s residents to transfer our emergency response equipment to their Haz Mat team thereby expanding their level of service to both Lebanon and Lancaster Counties. We express our sincere appreciation for all of our supporters over the past 44 years and sincerely wish Lebanon County hazmat team well into the future.
