The global climate change crisis challenges us to reflect critically on religious practice and studies. As a cross-cutting issue, the climate crisis affects religion in its multidimensionality and diversity of forms. Twenty-five contributions from different research fields to engage in a multi-perspective discourse and jointly develop cross-dimensional approaches.

Last June 2024, Dr. Jeane traveled to Iloilo City to visit the River Esplanade, which features the rehabilitated Jaro River. The success of the Esplanade is a perfect example of the power and promise of the Pasig River should the people of Metro Manila consider its well-being.

Fr. Leo Dagpin Jr is a graduate student in the GRASEF Program of the Department of Philosophy. Part of Fr. Leo's advocacy is raising more public awareness of the environmental legacy of the former Bishop of Dipolog, Bishop Jose Manguiran. On Earth Day 2022, the Diocese of Dipolog shares their tribute to the beloved Bishop.

EARTH DAY 2022 ba kamo? We have one who not only represents, but above all, embodies what ENVIRONMENTAL CARE TO THE MOST RADICAL LEVEL is all about -- our very own Bishop Emeritus Jose Manguiran!

• In the photo, he is holding the cap he himself had costumized to look like a large leaf. See his deep ecology?! 💚

• Here is one of his 'radical' poems:

YOUR PHILIPPINES AND MY PHILIPPINES

Your Philippines is stripped naked
By the logger’s teeth;
R***d by the treasure diggers,
Leaving her a pr******te by the
Blistering embrace of a foreign hand.

My Philippines is gifted
With its mountain peaks,
Surging reverently to the heaven,
Beaded by trees, blanketed by forest;
Veiled by the clouds.
Upon its shade, rests a home,
A sweet home for its local dwellers.

Your Philippine land
Is turned into haciendas;
By few multi-nationals.
Its plants are mono-cultured,
Its products turned into agri-business,
Its choicest fruits are served
On the foreign plate.

My Philippine land is to be shared:
Made into mini-farms by the Filipinos;
Its plants multi-cultured,
Its products; the means of livelihood,
Its choicest fruits serve the native mouth.

Your Philippine mountain, in the years ahead
Will desert their position,
To invade the rivers, mangrove and seas,
Rendering the fishing nets useless,
Leaving man’s mouth gaping-empty.

My Philippines must be cared for;
Get rid of nature’s rapers
Whether illegal or legal.
Get them to put on their pants,
Chase them out of this sacred land,
Less they plunge mankind into the empty kettle.

My dream will come true
For the value of man, as in any race
Lies not in the gathering of possessions made by others
But by producing something through his creative mind.
Crude might be his creations but these will move
Toward excellence, with his dignity exalted.

Mr. Rafael Dolor, a faculty and Social Engagement Committee member of the Department of Philosophy, served as a lector in a Mass of Solidarity for a Moral Choice at the Baclaran Church on April 6, 2022. CBCP President Bishop Ambo David delivered the homily.

For Raf Dolor, Bp Ambo David’s homily was strong and compelling. He said what had to be said and the community burst into a round of applause. Yet the reverential silence that followed gave the homily its right setting.

The Mangrove Model of Engaged Pedagogy
Dr. Jeane Peracullo

The mangrove is a shrub or small tree that grows in saline or brackish water. It is usually found to be intertwined with other mangrove trees as they provide ideal conditions for small flora and fauna to thrive. The mangrove is ubiquitous in Asia’s coastal areas and shorelines. In recent years, the mangrove has become increasingly threatened by climate change, rapid urbanization, and economic activities that rely on tourism. The mangrove symbolizes the vulnerabilities and the resilience of Asians amid the challenging conditions that the region confronts today.

The mangrove is a metaphor that describes the intertwining of religion, culture, and environmental education. The mangrove model of engaged pedagogy highlights the contact points (places where mangrove branches and trunks intertwine) between and among these academic areas.

The points of contact are where collaboration, cooperation, and interdisciplinarity occur. Since the mangrove thrives in its niche and where it exists as part of the biotic community, engaged pedagogy emphasizes the role of the community in determining the problems and the solutions to some environmental issues they face. The idea of niche is culled from the ecological sciences. The sense of place evoked by the concept of “home” is an essential theme in philosophy, spirituality, and religion. The vulnerability of the mangrove tree highlights how life is precarious, and the fact of its precariousness makes life worthy of preservation.
