People often ask me why I started the Northwest Michigan Salute to Service Expo.
I’m Emmersyn Sheaks, and service has always been part of my family’s story.
I grew up with family members who served our country, and today, my husband continues that tradition through his own military service.
Because of that, I’ve seen firsthand the sacrifices that come with serving—not just for the person in uniform, but for the entire family. I’ve seen the deployments, the long days, the uncertainty, and all of the things military families quietly carry.
I’ve also seen how difficult it can be to find and navigate the benefits and resources available to those who have served, especially here in Northern Michigan. Sometimes getting the help you need means long drives, multiple phone calls, and appointments scattered across different communities.
And I kept coming back to one question:
**What if we brought those resources to our veterans instead?**
That question became the Northwest Michigan Salute to Service Expo.
This event was created to bring veterans, active-duty service members, military families, and the organizations that serve them together in one place.
It’s about connection.
It’s about access.
It’s about making sure the people who have given so much know that their community is here for them.
This Expo isn’t about one organization, and it certainly isn’t just about one day.
It’s about building connections that continue long after the event is over.
If you’re a veteran, currently serving, a military family member, or someone who simply wants to support those who have served, I hope you’ll join us this Saturday.
And to every organization, business, volunteer, and community member who has helped make this possible—thank you.
It truly takes a community, and I’m so grateful for ours.
