Midwest Central would like to sincerely thank the Manito-Forest City Rotary Club for their continued support of the Gas Incentive Program.

Started three years ago by Mrs. Harbourn, the program helps working students and families with fuel assistance during difficult times between paychecks. Since its creation, more than 60 students and families have benefited from the program.

We are incredibly grateful to the Rotary Club for generously refunding the program for the upcoming school year and to Country General for their continued partnership in supporting our students and community.

The Midwest Central Raiders are headed to the regional semifinal after a dramatic 4-3 walkoff victory over Streator Woodland on Monday afternoon!

Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Raiders were down to their final outs before the offense came alive when it mattered most. Breckin Guy started the rally with a single, and Evan Schmidt followed with a clutch double to put runners on second and third with no outs.

After a strikeout, Zayne Hill came through in the biggest moment of the game, delivering a clutch RBI hit to tie the game at 3-3 and send the Raiders dugout into a frenzy.

But Midwest Central wasn’t finished.

With two outs and the winning run on base, Jaxon Tumilty stepped to the plate and delivered the game-winning hit, scoring Hill and sealing the Raiders’ incredible walkoff comeback to advance.

Tumilty led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI.

On the mound, Ryan Terrill shut the door for the Raiders, earning the win after tossing three scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out three. Dalton Johnson kept Midwest Central within striking distance early, throwing four innings and allowing just one earned run while scattering five hits and striking out two.

With the thrilling win, the Raiders now advance to the regional semifinal where they will face Lexington on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Roanoke-Benson.

This week, students in Employability Skills have been learning how to sew as they worked toward creating small pillows to keep while developing a valuable new life skill.

One student, Cozette Marte, brought previous sewing experience to class and went above and beyond by following a pattern to create a stuffed bird!

The sewing projects were such a hit that some students continued sewing even after completing their assignments, making additional trips throughout the week to work independently on new creations. We even had a few former Employability students join in after finishing their online college coursework for the year!

It has been wonderful seeing students build confidence, creativity, and practical skills through hands-on learning.

Finished up today with both boats outside of the top 10 but what an amazing inaugural season! We have put together a strong program in a short amount of time thanks to Principal Welch, our boat captains, the Board, Booster Club, local businesses, our community, and these amazing young anglers and their families. We really appreciate the support! We’re looking forward to getting more time on the water and coming back strong next year!

Midwest Central School District was excited to welcome Dr. Kuester from Bradley University along with one of her research assistants and previous MCHS graduate, Carly DeSutter, and 3rd grade student Avery Harbourn to conduct a brief research survey with our students (who gave parental/guardian consent).

The team surveyed 58 students (ages 9 to 18 years) regarding the research question: “Does the look of a social assistive robot matter to a student?” Avery previously participated in this research and was excited to help with this next phase of the project.

We are incredibly grateful for this partnership and the opportunities it provides our students in research, education, collaboration, engineering, and innovation. Outcomes of this phase of the project will be published this fall, with Carly and Mrs. Harbourn as co-authors.

A special thank you to Mrs. Deluhery, Mrs. Bortell, and Mr. Askins for welcoming the research team into your primary school classrooms. We also appreciate Mrs. DeSutter and Mrs. Harbourn for helping connect our high school students to this opportunity. We are eager to move forward with the next phase of the project.
