Please remember to support Manitou Businesses! Below is a link that will detail all of the businesses in Manitou Springs and their methods of providing service (delivery, takeout, websites, etc.).

It's Never Been a Bigger Deal to Shop Small.

As you may know, El Paso County will be moving to level Red on the COVID-19 dial. As an effect of this, some of our local businesses will need to reduce their capacity to 10%, and our restaurants will close their indoor dining. It is more important than ever that we, as a community, come together to support them through gift cards, online orders, takeout orders, and by promoting them in all ways possible. Visit: https://manitousprings.org/open-for-business/ for a list of what restaurants are open for carryout and/or delivery. Please note that many businesses will still remain open for in-person shopping!

November 28th marks #SmallBusinessSaturday and November 29th is the country's first-ever #ArtistsSunday, giving even more reasons to keep our local businesses in mind this holiday season. Whether you're shopping for Thanksgiving dinners, holiday presents, home office decor, or fresh-baked snacks, they have continued to be here for us, so let us continue to be there for them. Whether you're shopping online at your favorite restaurant's website, our community's new manitoumade.com marketplace, or in-person, please practice health and safety guidelines. Together, we can beat COVID-19 and keep our businesses open, our schools in-person, and our loved ones safe.

The newly implemented Manitou Arts, Cultural, and Heritage (MACH) Board will be designating 34% of funding generated from the MACH Sales Tax towards grants to foster arts, culture, and heritage within Manitou Springs.

Manitou Springs citizens of all ages and non-profits within Manitou Springs are eligible to apply. The MACH Board “encourages proposals from students and residents who present new, creative ideas.” If you’re an entity, individual, or non-profit outside of Manitou Springs you are still eligible to apply through a pass-through/fiscal sponsorship in partnership with a Manitou Springs registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

The deadline to apply for a grant from the MACH Board is January 31, 2021. Using the criteria outlined in the FAQs, the Board will review each application, and then make a recommendation to City Council regarding the distribution of the estimated $40,000.

We encourage any and all applicable individuals and/or entities to apply for the grants before the deadline.

Pauley Construction will begin utility work on Becker’s Lane and Manitou Avenue starting on December 14th. Conduit will be installed to underground their overhead utility lines.

Additionally, in preparation of the major bridge and roadway work on Becker’s Lane, on December 14th and December 15th, Becker’s Lane, from Manitou Avenue to El Paso Boulevard, will be closed to all traffic. For this two-day period, a detour will be available on Colombia Road. Additionally, once Becker’s Lane is reopened, utility work will continue on Manitou Avenue, resulting in minor traffic impacts.

Thank you for your understanding while we underground and improve our utilities infrastructure!

City crews have repaired the water main and will soon be lifting the road closure. Please remember, discolored water and/or low water pressure are common effects of a water main repair. To resolve the issue run cold water into your bathtub until the water is clear and/or the water pressure has returned to normal.

Manitou Springs Heritage Center

Have you seen the new trailhead signs ?

Over the past week, Manitou Springs Public Works installed new trailhead signs at six different locations across Manitou Springs. The new signs can be viewed at the following locations: Intemann Trail at Spring Street and Pawnee Avenue; the Red Mountain Trailhead; the Iron Mountain Trailhead on Pawnee Avenue; the Crystal Valley Cemetery Trailhead; Intemann Trail at the Crystal Park Road Trailhead; and, the Iron Mountain Trailhead on Pawnee Avenue. The new trail signage is sponsored and funded by the Manitou Springs Open Space Advisory Committee and the City of Manitou Springs Government.

The project was designed and organized by several key players. Dylan Becker of the city’s Planning Department designed and produced the beautiful maps gracing the signage. After producing several map designs, the Open Space Advisory Committee (OSAC) selected the maps best suited for the project and the trail. The signage also includes the distances of each trail segment as well as elevation gains and total elevation.

The Manitou Springs Heritage Center provided the history interpretations for each segment of the city’s trail system. According to Michael Maio, historian for the Heritage Center, “it was a wonderful opportunity to merge the history of the mountains surrounding Manitou with the beauty of the trails our city maintains.” The history topics include the Red Mountain Incline, Redstone Castle, the Legend of Emma Crawford, Crystal Valley Cemetery and several other points of interest.

The signs also post Rules and Regulations governing the city’s trail usage and several universal symbols relating to the rules. Nancy Wilson of OSAC provided consultation for some of the project’s components while Brent Combs provided most of the graphic design. Overall, it was a team effort in providing the city the much-needed trail signage describing our town’s open spaces and trails together with the colorful history pertinent to each trail.

Is there a water line repair near Via Piedras, our water is out since 3:45pm.
I've been seeing freshly cut wood (fire sized) at the trail head off of. Spring street for the last few days and there is less there today. The cold weather is coming, please if possible comb the trail for campers having fires
We need to hear from our city leadership about the Barr Trail fire in real time. Where are you?
We need fire updates now.
There are many places I would go visit in downtown Colorado Springs, but because the crazy parking prices, and no free parking to be found, I don't go. Why do I tell you this? Because I currently come visit Manitou Springs about twice a month, to go hiking, followed by getting some lunch and visiting a store or two. Now if you take away the free parking around Memorial Park (which is just a rumor I heard), then don't expect me to keep coming and supporting your local businesses.
Big debate brewing. Soldiers training out of hours on the Incline, early morning PT. Others also like to go up early morning. Does the military have special permission to conduct PT on the Incline outside of the reservation system? Your answer will clear up a lot of speculation.
City of Manitou Springs Government - You DO realize a lot of people are ignoring the fact that the Manitou Incline is supposed to be closed, and are sneaking up there to climb it anyway, right?
#NationalEMSWeek recognizes all emergency workers and the important work they do in our nation's communities. Without data and responses from the#2020Census, emergency response would not be effective and emergency workers would not have the proper resources to respond. Respond today at 2020census.gov to help your community better understand the needs for recovery from disasters and emergencies.
An open letter to the city of Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs To Whom It May Concern: I have been a resident of Colorado Springs for 20 years and I am a Colorado Native. I have heard that you are considering re-opening the Manitou Springs incline to reservations only and have plans to charge for access. This truly saddens my heart and I would like you to take a moment to read why the incline has helped to change my life and why I feel you are doing your citizens a huge disservice by not allowing the Incline to be free and accessible to all who want to conquer the mountain. Seven years ago you would have found me in a place of despair and trying to hold on by a thread. I was in an abusive relationship that destroyed my self-worth. I finally got the courage to leave my abusive husband but the emotional wounds ran deep and there were many dark hours. I believed I wasn’t worthy of anything good, that I was weak and ugly. I was emotionally and physically unhealthy. During this abusive relationship I gained a considerable amount of weight. I weighted 189 pounds and on my 5’4 frame that put me at a size 18. I started challenging myself to do the Incline. I would go once or twice a week, sometimes more. I started a mantra as I would ascend. For every step a phrase. First step, “I am worthy.” Second step “I am strong.” Third step “I am beautiful.” I would continue this all the way to the top. At first, I choked on these words, having to force them out of my month while tears rolled down my cheeks. I really didn’t believe what I was saying but I kept putting one foot in front of the other. If I started feeling down, it was off to the Incline I went. It was a hard journey but the Incline was my healing place. A place that reminded me I was worthy, I was strong and I was beautiful. It was a place that not only helped to heal my heart but it was also a place where I found my health. I lost nearly 60 pounds on that mountain and gained my life back. Had hiking the Incline been something that required me to reserve a spot ahead of time and pay for, this would not have been my story. I was a single mother of two on a very tight budget and I was struggling emotionally. Having to pay and reserve a spot a head of time would have been one more struggle for someone who in was crisis and working on their mental health. COVID-19 has already taken so much from us. It has put a huge strain on our citizens mental health. I realize mental health is something we don’t like to talk about and quite frankly do a poor job of dealing with as a society but I know that for some the Incline is where they find healing. It’s what keeps some from relapsing back into addiction, it’s where others contemplate serious issues and decisions they are working through. It’s where some find their health, and reclaim their self-worth and strength and for others it’s their place of joy. The Incline should be free and open to all who want to accept its challenge. Sincerely, Jamie Miller
It's unfortunate that at 8pm tonight, we have been out of water since 1:00, and no one from the city informed us that the work on Oak Place would result in a disruption of our water service today...you would think that the city could/should notify us so we could be a little prepared!
