Effective at noon today, Friday, August 21, 2026, the City of Manitou Springs has transitioned from Stage 2 to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions.

While this is a reduction in restrictions, fire danger remains a serious concern. Dry fuels, low moisture levels, limited precipitation, and above-average temperatures mean that even a small fire or spark can quickly become a wildfire.

Under Stage 1 restrictions:

- Open Burning Ban, defined as the prohibited use of any outside fire, including campfires and warming fires.
- This current ban excludes fires in permanently constructed fire rings within the city’s RV and Camping Parks; and charcoal grills and smokers, and wood burning fireplaces, (chiminia) or fire pits with proper fitting screen covers and with a minimum of 15’ separation from structures or other combustible material at private residences. None of these exclusions permit a total fuel area greater than 3 feet in diameter, and all must have a flame height of less than 2 feet.

- Outdoor Smoking Ban, defined as the prohibited use of any to***co product or similar material in ci******es, ci**rs, or pipes outdoors. This excludes smoking in enclosed buildings or structures, and along Manitou Avenue. Discarding of a lighted cigarette, cigar or pipe to***co product is strictly prohibited.

- These restrictions do not apply to gas-fueled grills used out-of-doors, or to fires within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves. Additionally, compliant fireplaces and wood-burning stoves within private residences are not included.

Please don't let the change to Stage 1 give you a false sense of security. We ask everyone to remain extremely cautious with anything that can produce a flame, heat, ember, or spark. Never leave a fire unattended, properly extinguish all fires, and make sure ci******es and other smoking materials are completely out and disposed of safely.

Community members are invited to meet the Fuels Crew, see some of the tools and equipment used for wildfire mitigation, and learn more about protecting your property from wildfire.

🏡 Learn about wildfire assessments for individual properties and what steps you can take to reduce wildfire risk around your home.

💰 Information will also be available about wildfire mitigation grant opportunities for homeowners, including how you may be able to get assistance with mitigation work on your property.

Come meet the crew, ask questions, see the equipment, and learn how you can help make your property and our community more wildfire resilient.

STAY WEATHER AWARE

Hot day again today Manitou. Stay cool out there. Hot temps, dry fuels and winds make for another Extreme Fire Danger day. Stay safe out there today. Make good decisions and protect your community.

Temperatures continue to warm this afternoon with mid 90s to near 100 degree highs. Red Flag Warnings are in effect from 1-8PM for Fremont and Pueblo Counties due to gusty winds and low humidity values.

Hot, dry and windy for tomorrow (Friday 8/7/2026). Extreme Fire Danger. Take extra caution to prevent spark or fire. Be on the lookout and report fire activity. Stay safe Manitou.

Friday will bring another hot and dry day to south central and southeastern Colorado. In addition, critical fire weather continues for portions of the area, with a Red Flag Warning in effect for Fremont and Pueblo Counties during the afternoon. Avoid activities that could spark a wildfire!

Hey Manitou,

Its been smoky lately!! While this smoke is coming from fires burning miles away it can still pose a danger.

Take precautions if smoke is present:

🚶 Limit prolonged outdoor activity, especially strenuous exercise.
🏠 Keep windows and doors closed when possible.
🌬️ Run your air conditioner or air purifier on recirculate if available.
😷 Those with asthma, COPD, heart disease, older adults, young children, and pregnant individuals should take extra care.
🚨 If you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, or severe symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Remember, smoke conditions can change quickly as winds shift. Stay informed, monitor local air quality, and be prepared for changing conditions.

Stay safe out there and take care of your neighbors!

With the shift in wind, smoke from distant fires South and West of the Pikes Peak region is being pushed into our region - making it appear like we have a fire close by.

This also brings a decrease in air quality. If you feel affected, stay indoors as much as possible and avoid strenuous exercise.

Our thoughts and hopes are with those affected by the fires. Let us continue to be mindful of fire safety and mutual preparedness in our own community this week.
