After viewing today's fiscal court meeting I feel as Chief of this dept I need to set some things straight that were said during the meeting.
In regards to the MHP that is going in at the intersection of Rainwater Lane and Nebo Road, yes I understand there is a lot of frustration from a lot of people, my frustration comes from individuals doubting the abilities of our dept and the members. Yes, fire hydrants are a big concern on our part with so many structures in a tight area but rest assured that with or without hydrants we have a plan B for a water source. It was stated that I said we do not have the equipment or manpower which is false. We have the equipment and a group of wonderful firefighters who are willing and able to battle anything that comes our way. We have the most up to date equipment needed, we have 4000 gallons of water sitting in our bays on the fire apparatus. We have a box alarm for structure fires that automatically pages 3 depts at the same time to save time, with a fourth dept about to be added in a box for the sole purpose of the MHP and an additional 3000 gallons of water. A dump tank can be used so that the tankers can continously shuttle water if needed. The average fully involved trailer fire takes as little as 2000 gallons up to 10000 gallons of water to extinguish. Within the first 15 minutes we can have 8000 gallons on scene.
Second, response times, it was stated that it takes our dept 20 to 30 minutes to respond, that information is false, Manitou Fire dept has a 14 minute response time from page to on scene, and hats including calls ag longer distances, with the MHP being so close to the dept we are looking st 10 minutes from page to on scene. .That time is our members stopping what they are doing, and driving to the station, let that sink in, stopping what they are doing, leaving their families, leaving the dinner table to respond to a strangers worst day to help, for nothing.
I will leave you with this, I am very proud of my firefighters and the professionalism have the responding to calls, we have 26 able bodied people who serve our wonderful community. So in a nice way if you truly believe you can do it any better, applications are always available.
Thank you
Michael Walker
