Amanda Cordova, Soil and Water Department Educator, along with Matt Rataczak, Natural Resource Conservation Service Conservationist gave Soil Basics and Soil Health presentations to 15 students during a Conservation Education Inc. workshop. Students took away several key points regarding soil: "I was surprised to hear that it takes 500 years for only one inch of topsoil to be created'. Another student was interested in knowing that, on average, only 5% of what we call soil is organic material.

Matt R. performed an erosion demonstration to show how two soil samples react differently to water depending on their ground cover and usage.

The Earth Day/Healthy Kids event that was held at the YMCA on Saturday was a success! Many children stopped at the SWCD booth to take a pledge to protect the earth. Some of the promises included: Recycling, picking up litter, and turning off lights when they are not using them. Everyone who made a pledge put a cutout of their hand on the poster. The children also got a chance to be crafty and make their own earth.

The Manitowoc County Soil and Water Conservation Department, in partnership with UW Extension-Manitowoc, held a Soil Health and Cover Crop Forum March 9th, in Manitowoc County. A total of 75 were in attendance including: Farmers, Seed Dealers, Certified Crop Advisors, and Government Agencies.

There were two presenters at the forum:

2) Mike Ballweg: Mike is the Crops and Soils agent with UW Extension-Sheboygan County. His presentation gave attendees insight to a cover crops research project on annual clovers and small grains and where they might fit into the rotation.

The presenters were followed by four panelists who discussed projects they have been involved in and their experiences with cover crops:

1) Brent Petersen: Works with Brown County Conservation Department as a Demonstration Farm Project Manager. He is also a Certified Crop Advisor.
2) Dan Brick: Owns and manages Brickstead Farms in Brown County.
3) Bruce Riesterer: Bruce has worked as a conservationist for Manitowoc County SWCD for 30 years. He is also a local farmer.
4) Jim Fitzgerald- Jim along with his wife Sandie and 4 of their children own and operate Soaring Eagle Dairy Manitowoc County. In the past, Soaring Eagle Dairy has been a Discovery Farms host farm and is currently involved with a cover crops research project with Dr. Matt Ruark.

Recently, the town of Kossuth Exclusive Agriculture Zoning was certified by Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. Residents of Kossuth are now eligible to participate in the Farmland Preservation Program. This is a voluntary program that allows participants to collect a tax credit of $7.50 per acre for implementing agricultural standards and prohibitions. Some of the standards and prohibitions include, but are not limited to:

-Annually develop and follow a Nutrient Management Plan designed to keep nutrients and sediment from entering surface water and groundwater
- Use phosphorus index (PI) standard to ensure that their NMP adequately controls phosphorous runoff
-Avoid tilling within 5 feet of the edge of the bank of surface waters.

For Kossuth residents: The Manitowoc County Soil and Water Conservation Department has scheduled a time to discuss your opportunities regarding participation in the Farmland Preservation Program:

DATE: Thursday, March 10th, 2016
