🚨Structure Fire 5-21-26🚨

Manitowoc Fire Department was dispatched around 9 PM on Thursday evening for a report of a bang with smoke and flames in a house on the 1000 block of Glenview Drive in Manitowoc. A working Still response on MABAS 128 card 7-1-1 was assigned with a compliment included Manitowoc Fire Truck 1, Engine 2, Engine3, Med 3, and Engine 4, Branch Fire Department, Two Rivers Fire Department, and Newton Fire Department. First-in crews reported dark smoke coming from a home access door through an open overhead garage door. Initial crews noted smoke throughout the house, and extinguished the fire in a back bedroom within 15 minutes. The resident was able to self-evacuate, but a primary search to ensure no one else was in the building was completed during the fire attack. Fire damage was limited to the bedroom- the room of origin- since the resident closed the door to the bedroom when exiting the house. The limited damage to the rest of the house is a testament to the importance of closing doors at night or when exiting a building. This simple act helps to limit fire and smoke spread, and protect egress routes for others in the event of a fire.

At approximately 02:06:44 hours the Manitowoc Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire in the 600 block of N 5th Street. Updated information upon response was all occupants were able to self evacuate and the fire was located in the basement. Upon arrival Car 3 assumed command and observed a 2 story wood frame dwelling with smoke visible from the front of the dwelling. Truck 1 crew confirmed a working basement fire and directed Engine 2 to the best location to start fire suppression work. Primary search was completed and 2 cats were found and removed. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes. One person was treated for smoke inhalation but wasn’t transported. Command upgraded the fire to a MABAS box alarm to the 1st level for an additional ambulance.

Fire units cleared the scene around 0500 hours.

We would like to point out that the resident was alerted to the fire by a working smoke detector in her home. Please make sure each level of your home has a working smoke detector.

🚨Meet our new recruits!! (Left to Right)🚨

Cardan “CJ” Meissner is 23 years old and is from Two Rivers, Wisconsin. He attended UW–Stevens Point, UW–Manitowoc, and Lakeshore Technical College, where he completed his EMT, Fire I, and Paramedic certifications. He also attended NWTC for Fire II training. This is the first fire department CJ has served with. During paramedic school, he completed a two-and-a-half-month field internship with the Manitowoc Fire Department. CJ became interested in firefighting after being encouraged to explore the career path while trying to decide on his future. After completing a ride-along at Station One, he discovered a passion for firefighting and paramedicine and decided to pursue both careers.

Lucian Meyer is 20 years old and has lived in Manitowoc his entire life. He graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School and continued his education at Fox Valley Technical College in the Fire Protection program, where he is close to completing his degree. He also holds his EMT license. Lucian has served as a volunteer firefighter with the Rockwood Fire Department for about a year. He was drawn to firefighting because he wanted a career that is different every day and challenges him both mentally and physically. Knowing he wanted to become a first responder, he was encouraged by his uncle to pursue the fire service. In his free time, Lucian enjoys fishing, golfing, and attending Packers games on the weekends.

Cameron Grasee is 21 years old and grew up in Whitelaw, Wisconsin, where he attended Valders High School. After graduating, he attended Fox Valley Technical College and earned his associate degree as a Fire Protection Technician. He later attended Lakeshore College, where he obtained his paramedic certification. In his free time, Cameron enjoys weightlifting, playing basketball, and hiking. He became interested in firefighting through family and community influences, including uncles who served as volunteer firefighters and friends whose parents worked as career firefighters.

Conor Waterstreet is 20 years old and is from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. He began his career in the fire service after making a last-minute decision to respond to a flyer for the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department, where he has now served part-time for nearly two years. For Conor, becoming a first responder has felt more like a calling than a choice, as many members of his family have served in fire, police, and EMS careers. Although most of his family members work in law enforcement, he says the firefighter-versus-police jokes run wild in his household! Conor looks forward to working with the department and continuing to grow into the best firefighter and first responder he can be.

Matthew Welch is 21 years old and grew up near Valders, Wisconsin. He graduated from Valders High School in 2023 before taking a gap year and moving to Colorado to work at a ski resort. While there, he discovered his passion for firefighting after becoming friends with a ski patroller who also worked as a full-time firefighter. Matthew returned home in the spring of 2024 and completed a ride-along with the Two Rivers Fire Department to see if the profession was the right fit for him. After just one day, he knew firefighting was the career he wanted to pursue and immediately enrolled in classes at Fox Valley Technical College. Matthew is currently finishing his Fire Protection degree at FVTC and holds his NREMT-Basic license. He has served as a volunteer firefighter with the Valders Fire Department for about a year and joined the Valders Fire Department Ambulance Service in January 2026, where he has been working part-time as an EMT for the past four months.

The Manitowoc WI Fraternal Order of Eagles #706 held their annual Awards Banquet last Saturday, and our department awarded Firefighter/Paramedic Benjamin Riesterer as the 2026 Eagles Club Firefighter of the Year! This award is a recognition of the professionalism, dedication, and quiet leadership you have shown since joining us in September 2023 from the Safer Fire District.

From day one, you made an immediate and positive impact on the organization. You lead by example, and your strong work ethic was quickly recognized and embraced by the staff. You bring compassion to every call, and your interactions consistently exemplify our mission and the values we hold as a department. You have stepped forward to strengthen our technical capabilities, most notably by enhancing our rope rescue training, and you have taken on the important responsibility of helping ensure our new heavy rescue is properly equipped and ready to serve the community when it arrives. Your willingness to take on these tasks has raised the standard for our entire team. Though quiet by nature, you have earned the deep respect of your peers. When you speak, your teammates listen because your contributions are always valuable and timely. In addition to your work here, your service as a seasonal wildland firefighter with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources demonstrates further commitment to public safety across the region. We also appreciate the craftsmanship and focus you bring to life outside the firehouse, whether it's working with leather or honing other skills.

We are proud to present you with the 2026 Firefighter of the Year award. Thank you for your outstanding service, leadership, and steady commitment to our community. We look forward to your continued contributions and are grateful to count you among our finest. Congratulations Ben! 👏👏👏
