The Mankato Kiwanis Club got a very spirited presentation on Monday from Travis Thul, VP Student Success & Engagement at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

He spoke about some of the projects launched under President Edward Inch that have focused on maximizing student access to the community, making the university a force multiplier for regional industry, and assuring that Mankato is Minnesota’s hub for growing talent and entrepreneurship.

Travis was hired in 2024 to carry that vision forward. Initiatives underway include launching the Rural Experiential STEM Education Partnership Initiative (RESEPI) that helps assure all students have access to learning about the expanding area; increasing collaboration with partners such as GMG, Region 9, and the South Central Service Cooperative; re-imagining the Small Business Development Center as a state leading entrepreneurship force multiplier; and increasing resources for public/private partnerships.

All of these things help put the spotlight on Mankato and Minnesota State University as a location on the cutting edge of engineering and industry.

Born in St. Paul, Travis brings with him a career spanning entrepreneurship, military service, engineering, and academia. Prior to his role at MSU, he was the Director of Operations and a Senior Fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Technological Leadership Institute. Other roles have included Vice President for the Program on China and Transformational Exports at the Export-Import Bank of the United States, Dean of Technology at Minnesota State College Southeast, and time as an electronics engineer with the Federal Communications Commission. In his military capacity, he is a reserve Coast Guard commander appointed as the Acting Senior Reserve Officer for District Great Lakes. His area of responsibility spans Lake of the Woods, MN to Buffalo, NY.

Travis holds a Doctor of Engineering from the George Washington University, he is a licensed Professional Engineer, served as a White House Fellow under both President Trump and President Biden, is currently the Registered Consulting Engineer Member on the Minnesota Board of Electricity, and is Vice President of the Mankato Family YMCA Board of Directors.

He is the inventor of the “Ramen Now!” desktop ramen noodle cooker (and founder of Ramen Now, LLC) and spent 10 years leading the American National Standards Committee working group for wireless power (which published the internationally adopted standards for electromagnetic compliance of such technologies).

The club was on its best behavior Monday as Nicole Neudecker, Mankato Public Safety Officer, brought a few of her friends in to talk about Mankato Public Safety Police Explorers.

Nicole has been a Public Safety officer for over seven years. The Law Enforcement Exploring Program is a hands-on, career exploration initiative that gives young people the opportunity to learn about public safety careers through practical experience and mentorship. Locally, the Mankato Public Safety Explorer Post #243 serves youth ages 14 through 20, offering a structured program that combines classroom instruction with scenario-based, real-world training exercises.

Explorers meet regularly at the Public Safety Center and participate in activities such as ride-alongs with officers, skills training, and competitions at the Minnesota Law Enforcement
Explorer Conference, where they can apply what they’ve learned and even compete for scholarships. In addition to training, members actively support the community by volunteering at local events like Kiwanis Holiday Lights, the Mankato Marathon, and the “Shop with a Hero” program, strengthening their connection to the community they serve.

The program is provided at no cost to participants — including uniforms and equipment — ensuring accessibility while helping students build leadership, teamwork, and decision-making skills. By fostering positive relationships between youth and public safety professionals, the Mankato Explorer Post plays an important role in developing future leaders and strengthening community trust.

The club got a good lesson in how the community comes forward to help those with food insecurities when it heard Monday from Laura Marsala Peterson, Living Earth Center executive director. "Growing Beyond the Garden" was the program description.

Laura shared how community-growing spaces address social determinants of health, provide economic pathways, and foster community engagement, and how individuals, organizations, and businesses can help cultivate good things within the region. She highlighted new and exciting developments at Living Earth Center as it grows to meet the needs of the Greater Mankato community.

She touched briefly on exciting future plans to be announced soon and how the relationship with Good Counsel Hill owner Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership is going.

Laura is in her 8th year as the executive director of the Living Earth Center. She is passionate about the power of community growing spaces to address health, social, and economic challenges in our region and to create a better-connected, thriving community.
