After a 12 hour jury trial, just a few hours after the election, the welcomed distraction gave me some time to reflect.
A mixture of emotions certainly were felt, but mostly, I've come to feel extremely positive about the results.
First - Where did I come from? I must acknowledge that while I went to Bethany and MSU - Mankato around 1998- 2002, I am almost entirely unknown to the main voting block in this election. I did not have the significant base support of a 20+ year veteran attorney who has lived in the Mankato area for that period of time.
Second - Where did we go? We went from 0% - 30%!!! Our team took 2nd place and beat a 3rd candidate in the primary - a well established, entrenched attorney, well known in the community - with a respectible 30% of the votes - going from unknown to a strong challenger!
Third - How did we improve from the primary to the general election?
Our team took a large margin of the 3rd candidate's 22% by going from 30% to 47% a huge 17% gain!
Result? We all win when we become informed voters and get to make a real choice. This was the first time in 27 years the voters could vote for change. While the numbers were close, the newly elected county attorney has a strong incentive from the voters to make real and lasting change in the county attorney's office. People came to vote for change!
The future: I've received wonderful support post-election to run again in 4 years. While I can't predict the future - I feel strongly that the leadership for change did not happen this Nov. 4th - and that I still strongly desire reform and positive change for Blue Earth County.
Conclusion: Thank you all for the text messages - FB notes - and personal face to face showings of support in the last day and I'm sure the coming days. I am proud to represent the only voice of positive reform and transparent leadership with a new direction and accountability for the BE County Attorney's office. I don't intend to remain on the sidelines, and hope to get more involved in every aspect of the community each and every day.
