Hi guys, great job to all of you who turned in work last week about American artist Norman Rockwell. I really did enjoy your writing!
This week, we are going to explore the options a student of Art might have if they either chose to:
1. Not go to college and try to promote themselves and sell their work online and through galleries/local businesses.
2. Attend a two year Graphic Design school and pursue a career in Greeting Card Design, Game Design, Animation, Product Merchandising Design, plus any other career in Design that uses software for its initial production.
3. Attend a four year University and receive a Bachelor's Degree in Art, called a B.F.A (Bachelor's of Fine Arts) and pursue a career in an industry that requires that level of education, such as Interior Design, Fashion Design, Merchandising, Education, Sports Photograph, plus any other career in Fine Arts that would require that level of education.

https://www.theartcareerproject.com/ Here is a link you might start out with but of course there is an abundant amount of info you can research on your own.

The reason why we are looking into this is because you may have a little extra time and are not on a (often tiring) school schedule and may want to think about your future choices as an artist. I wish someone had given me broader advice on career options.
So get to it and find out how you can finance your dream of spending a life being CREATIVE and making a living at it!

Your assignment is to research on your own, using any website or YouTube site and write a half page synopsis (summary) of what you learned. You must include the following information:
-why I would consider this as a career
-what I would need to finish for education to accomplish this
-what I would need to prepare in order to interview (portfolio)
-what type of pay scale can I expect
-how would I maneuver 'up the ladder' to increase my responsibilities and pay scale, if I wanted to pursue that

Rockwell presented the world with the defining picture of what it meant to be "all-American". He is remembered chiefly for his 47-year association with The Saturday Evening Post weekly, for whom he painted over 320 cover images, and his long-standing connection with the Boy Scouts of America, for whom he provided artworks for its annual calendar for most of his working years. His preoccupation with the small but important daily lives of the American whole family, not to mention his vital contribution to the World War II advertising, have helped him achieve American icon status. Preferring to be thought of as a painter rather than an illustrator, he is best known perhaps for a particular style of painting rather than for specific works and and titles. His vision of the American small town has seeped into the nation's collective consciousness. Though his strong patriotism and pictorial style made him an easy target for gallery artists who liked modern stuff that made no visual sense, his later work revealed the influence of Social Realism and his later pieces, which he produced for Look magazine, took on a more social-political edge. History has been very appreciative of Rockwell's contribution to the pictorial arts in America and his nostalgic images continue to adorn calendars, post-cards, posters and other art venues.
Please write a (5-10 sentence) short paragraph that would tell the "story" of each of these paintings. This is not an Art Analysis, but your chance to be creative and verbally describe the story that this historic artist is visually explaining.

WEEK TWO:
Remember to please scroll through ALL all the posts below which include a short video, pictures of the Sistine Chapel and at the end of the artist's bio some short questions. You can either post your written analysis of Michelangelo's ceiling on this page or email them to me for credit for Week 2 of Continuous Learning :)

The Renaissance - Michelangelo Hands-on Extension Project:
Tape a piece of paper underneath a table and lie on your back. Try to draw two people with outstretched arms touching their fingers, like the portrait of Adam on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Now, if you have paint, try to paint within your outlines.

Finally, a type of paint called Egg Tempera was very popular during the Renaissance. Break an egg and discard the yolk, now stir the egg white until it's a little frothy, then mix some powdered pigment (eye shadow, face powder) into the egg white and try to paint a few lines with this sticky weird paint- it's what they used to use--Egg Tempera!

Michelangelo probably began working on the plans and for the Sistine Chapel ceiling in April 1508. The prep work was completed by late July the same year . It was recorded that Michelangelo had "decorated the upper, arched part with very beautiful pictures and gold" . There are several theories about his process.
One theory is that the ceiling's main frescoes were applied and painted in phases, with the scaffolding each time dismantled and moved to another part of the room, beginning at the Chapel's west end.
Another theory is that the scaffolding must have spanned the entire Chapel for years at a time.To remove the existing decoration stars and a night sky on the ceiling, the entire area had to be accessible for workmen to chisel away the starry sky fresco before any new work was done.
Michelangelo designed his own scaffold, a flat wooden platform on brackets built out from holes in the wall near the top of the windows, rather than being built up from the floor.
The entire ceiling is a fresco, which is an ancient method for painting murals that relies upon a chemical reaction between damp lime plaster and water-based pigments to permanently fuse the work into the wall. Michelangelo had been an apprentice in the workshop of a prolific of Florentine fresco painter.
Michelangelo painted onto the damp plaster using a wash technique to apply broad areas of color, then as the surface became drier, he revisited these areas with a more linear approach, adding shade and detail with a variety of brushes. For some textured surfaces, such as facial hair and wood-grain, he used a broad brush with bristles as sparse as a comb. He employed all the finest workshop methods and best innovations, combining them with a diversity of brushwork and breadth of skill far exceeding that which was needed.
The bright colors and broad, cleanly defined outlines make each subject easily visible from the floor. Despite the height of the ceiling, the proportions of the Creation of Adam are such that when standing beneath it, "it appears as if the viewer could simply raise a finger and meet those of God and Adam".
It is recorded that Michelangelo painted in a standing position, not lying on his back, that "The work was carried out in extremely uncomfortable conditions, from his having to work with his head tilted upwards". Michelangelo may have described his physical discomfort in a poem, accompanied by a sketch in the margin.

Below is a flattened rendition of the ceiling and the three dimensional rendition of the ceiling. Please go to Google>image and do a search on a close up of any Sistine Chapel figure (person) and then please describe in a paragraph why his style of painting might be an indicator of his true artistic love--Sculpture. In other words, how does his painting style of the human figure prove him to be interested in three-dimensional form, with lots of deep shadows and strong highlights?

Next, comment on his use of color. He is describing Old Testament stories about the Christian religion, do you think that the bright use of color is appropriate? why or why not?

Finally, comment on the organizational aspect of the ceiling itself. Is it symmetrically balanced and organized into sections? what is the effect that this has on the viewer? Is it appropriate to the subject of the painting?

WEEK ONE
After you finish the brief video below and post your discussion answers, you have the option to complete this hands-on extension project:
Matisse Wax Painting
you will need cardboard, 4 or more brightly colored crayons, scissors, a Popsicle stick or q-tip or junk brush, blow dryer
Go ahead and cut the cardboard to be about 6" square, next melt the crayons with the blow dryer onto the cardboard and while the wax is wet, go ahead and use the q-tip/brush to paint either a bowl of fruit or a portrait (like Matisse's painting). This project will look even better if the cardboard has a base coat of white paint (any kind-house paint, acrylic).
Please post your work so we can all see it.
