🔥 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝘽𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙔𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 🔥
Open burning of debris is the single-largest cause of spring wildfires in New York State. When temperatures warm and the past fall's debris and leaves dry out, wildfires can start and spread easily, further fueled by winds and a lack of green vegetation.
Although open burning is limited year-round across Suffolk County, New York State enacted strict restrictions on springtime open burning in 2009 to help prevent wildfires. With the annual statewide burn ban beginning today, here are a few important reminders:
🌲 Residential brush fires are prohibited during the spring burn ban, when most wildfires occur.
🪵 Backyard fire pits and campfires are permitted if they are less than 3 feet high and 4 feet in length, width, or diameter.
🚫 Only charcoal or dry, clean, untreated, or unpainted wood may be burned.
🧯 Fires must never be left unattended and must be completely extinguished after use.
🍂 Burning garbage or leaves is prohibited year-round in New York State.
🦺 These regulations are in place to help protect our community, prevent brush fires, and keep our firefighters safe.
🚒 If you see an unsafe fire or a fire spreading, call 911 immediately.
