It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the Mansfield University Police Department shares the unexpected passing of Chief Zachary Stager of the Mansfield Borough Police Department.

Chief Stager was not only a respected colleague and a dedicated public servant, but he was also a proud graduate of Commonwealth University-Mansfield and the Mansfield University Public Safety Training Institute's Municipal Police Academy. To have an alumnus lead our local borough department was a source of pride for our entire campus and local community.

Working alongside him, we saw firsthand his unwavering commitment to the safety, well-being, and unity of the community he grew up in. His leadership, integrity, and unique soft-spoken personality left an indelible mark on all of us.

The officers and staff of the Mansfield University Police Department extend our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to Chief Stager’s family, loved ones, and our fellow brothers and sisters at the Mansfield Borough Police Department during this incredibly difficult time.

We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our local law enforcement family as we mourn this immense loss.

Rest easy, Chief. We have the watch from here. 👮‍♂️💙 Once a Mountie, always a Mountie.

As the recent theme has been extreme cold 🥶, here’s a reminder of the forecast for today through 10 AM tomorrow. Temperatures will remain in the single digits, but wind chills will be dangerously cold at -30 degrees.
https://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=PAZ037&warncounty=PAC117&firewxzone=PAZ037&local_place1=Mansfield%20PA&product1=Extreme+Cold+Warning&lat=41.8072&lon=-77.0732

It's hard to miss that it's ❄️🌡out there! With this in mind, please see the message below from our friends with CU Health Services .

‼️Exposure to extreme cold can cause frostbite within 5-10 minutes and life-threatening within 30 minutes.

📋 Here’s what you can do:

❌ Don’t walk alone! Walking alone in extreme cold, especially while intoxicated, significantly increases the risk of injury, disorientation, and medical emergencies.
🚱 Avoid excessive drinking. Alcohol increases heat loss and can mask signs of hypothermia—making cold exposure much more dangerous than usual.
⏰ Limit time outside and stay dry. Frostbite and hypothermia can happen very quickly in extreme cold and wet clothes cause rapid heat loss.
🏂 Layer up and cover skin. Wear warm layers, hats, gloves, scarves, and waterproof shoes. Cover exposed skin.
📖 Know the warning signs of hypothermia and get help immediately: uncontrollable shivering, numbness, irregular heartbeat, slurred speech, confusion, or extreme fatigue.
📖 Know the warning signs of frostbite: cold/pale skin, feeling of pins and needles or burning, numbness or blistering, muscle/joint stiffness, or feeling of hard skin.

🚨If you or someone else needs emergency assistance, 📲 contact 🚔University Police by calling 911 right away. Please look out for yourself and each other.
