It’s the first day of Mansfield Public Schools School year!

Please be mindful of the school zone, we will be in the school zone “reminding” the motoring public of the 20 mph speed limits.

We have reassigned an additional officer to the SRO’s temporarily to assist Detective Wright and Officer Kelley in setting some safety norms to begin the school year as well.

It’s going to be a busy weekend on the roads in Mansfield and across the surrounding area!

Wheaton College students are returning to Norton, the LPGA FM Championship is underway Thursday through Sunday at TPC Boston, and the Savannah Bananas are taking over Gillette Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

Here in Mansfield, the Xfinity Center has events scheduled four nights in a row, Thursday through Sunday, including a sold-out Pitbull concert Saturday night.

With several major events happening at the same time, motorists should expect heavier-than-normal traffic and delays throughout the region, particularly on Routes 1, 140, 123, I-95, I-495, and roads surrounding the venues. Please be respectful of our neighborhoods as you pass through.

Before heading out:
Check event and start times
Plan your route ahead of time
Be aware that some local roads may be restricted to through traffic
Allow extra travel time and pack your patience
Carpool whenever possible if you’re attending an event

A little planning and patience will go a long way this weekend. Please drive safely and give yourself some extra time to get where you’re going!

Paving Day is TOMORROW! Refer to this Final Pave notice for more information and the impact on your Thursday drive.

The Highway Division has scheduled Final Paving, for the Spring, East and High Streets Road Construction Projects for Thursday, August 27th.

Paving will start on Spring Street, to East Street and to end on High Street.

Crews will be onsite at 6:00am and paving is expected to last until 5:00pm. Detail Officers will be on site directing local traffic ONLY. A Road Closure with Detour will be in place. Delays are to be expected so please plan accordingly.

> Expect delays travelling to/from your property

As of 7:08 this morning, a power disruption is affecting homes in the area of East Street up through the Back Bay. We have been getting calls from residents from Fairfield Park to the Schools.

Our exceptional electrical enthusiasts at MMED are responding and expect restoration of service within the next hour!

The following is a press release from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office:

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn, III announced a fatality from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound that took place in the parking lot of the Mansfield Police Department last evening.

At approximately 7:08 p.m. last night, July 27, Mansfield Police received a 911 call alerting them that a male with a possible firearm would be located in a parking lot. A ping of the phone that placed the 911 call traced the phone to the parking lot of the Mansfield Police Department.

Officers were able to locate the motor vehicle in the lot of the police department and observed a male with a firearm inside of the vehicle. The male was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Mansfield Officers then took up a position to secure the perimeter and requested assistance from a SWAT team. Approximately one hour later, a drone was utilized to determine that the single occupant of the motor vehicle was no longer moving.

The SWAT Team entered the vehicle and located 31-year-old Manuel Casillas of Mansfield deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police recovered a firearm from the hands of the decedent.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office along with the Mansfield Police Department.

UPDATE: The incident outside the police station has been resolved, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing. Additional information may be released by the Bristol County District Attorney's Office as appropriate.

The Mansfield Police Department is working an active incident involving an individual who is believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis and is armed with a firearm in a vehicle outside the Mansfield Police Station.

At this time, officers have established a secure perimeter around the area while they work to bring the situation to a safe resolution.

The Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (METRO-LEC) is responding to assist. The Mansfield Fire Department is staged to assist as needed, and local police departments are providing mutual aid to help with detours and road closures.

Residents and motorists are asked to avoid the area until further notice. This is an isolated incident and there is no additional threat to the public beyond the immediate area of the incident.

No further information is available at this time. Additional updates will be provided as they become available.
