Our Story
Each May there will be 16,000+ orphans in Russia that will “graduate”. Most of them will be given around $30 and turned loose to make their way alone in the world. The majority will fall prey to drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. Some will even be taken and forced into slavery. Who will lend a hand in this unknown and unfriendly world? Who will encourage them to keep trying positive solutions?
Allies in Youth Development (AiYD) is stepping up to help. In our Voronezh, Russia orphanage, we have established "Planeta Druzey" (Planet of Friends) a program designed to give orphans the tools and support network they desperately need to become healthy established individuals. Through the mentorship of locally trained university students serving as big brothers and sisters to the orphans, this group of previously abandoned youth will be given positive role models in their lives. In addition to the incredible impact of mentorship, our program strives to attain university placement and apprentice programs for those interested in further education and advanced job opportunities.
In 2014, we also expanded to a new orphanage in Moldova and a community in South Ossetia. Here, we are empowering university students to encourage orphans. South Ossetia is war-torn and in desperate need. Many of the children have lost either one or both parents in a recent war.
We believe that the life skills taught in our mentorship program will last a lifetime for the orphans who are reached and the university students who are trained to assist.
